Job Summary
The Will Call Clerk supports the Will Call area, where plant material is staged and maintained until customers arrive to pick up their orders. This role helps ensure orders are organized, properly maintained, and ready for customer pickup. The position requires strong plant identification knowledge, attention to detail, and excellent customer service skills to support a smooth and efficient pickup experience for customers.
Essential Functions
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of plant identification, plant quality, and plant health.
- Ensure plants in the Will Call area are watered appropriately and perform necessary maintenance to maintain plant condition.
- Provide excellent customer service with a positive attitude and willingness to assist customers.
- Communicate with Sales, Receiving, Pulling, Cross Dock teams, and customers when questions or issues arise regarding orders.
- Monitor older orders remaining in Will Call and notify Sales staff to confirm pickup timing with customers.
- Assist customers with loading their orders and ensure the plant material loaded matches the order or invoice.
- Assist customers in resolving any issues related to their order.
- Utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain company equipment in clean and proper working condition.
- Maintain nursery grounds by keeping work areas clean, organized, and safe for employees, customers, and vendors.
- Handle nursery stock carefully to ensure plants are watered, maintained, and placed in appropriate locations.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist other nursery departments as needed.
- Duties are subject to change at any time at management’s discretion.
Experience and Other Requirements
Required
- Ability to identify plant material and recognize plant quality standards.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to coordinate with multiple departments to resolve order issues.
Preferred
- Experience working in a nursery, landscape industry, or related field.
- Knowledge of plant handling and staging practices in nursery operations.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This position is performed primarily outdoors in active nursery environments.
Work conditions include varying weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, and exposure to dust, plant material, moisture, and seasonal allergens.
Physical requirements include:
- Remaining in a standing or seated position for extended periods.
- Extensive walking throughout the nursery during the workday.
- Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, and turning at the waist.
- Working on uneven surfaces including dirt, gravel, plant material, and irrigated areas.
- Use of hands and fingers for grasping and moving plant material.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs independently (approximately 75% of the time).
- Participating in team lifts up to 100 lbs (approximately 25% of the time) when required.
