DWIHN Part-Time Legal Consultant
Overview:
This part-time position provides legal expertise and guidance to DWIHN on a variety of matters related to healthcare law, compliance, and general business operations. The Legal Consultant will work closely with DWIHN's leadership team and other departments to ensure the organization operates within legal and ethical boundaries.
Responsibilities:
Legal Advice and Consultation: Provide legal advice and guidance to DWIHN staff and leadership on a wide range of issues, including:
Healthcare Law: HIPAA, Medicaid/Medicare regulations, mental health law, substance abuse regulations, patient rights, and confidentiality.
Contract Law: Review, draft, and negotiate contracts with vendors, providers, and other parties.
Compliance: Assist in developing and implementing compliance programs to ensure adherence to federal and state laws and regulations.
Corporate Governance: Advise on matters related to corporate governance, conflicts of interest, and ethical conduct.
Risk Management: Identify and assess legal risks and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.
Legal Research: Conduct legal research on various topics to support DWIHN's legal needs.
Policy Development: Assist in the development and review of DWIHN's policies and procedures to ensure legal compliance.
Litigation Support: Assist with litigation matters, including discovery, investigation, and settlement negotiations (if applicable).Training: Develop and deliver legal training to DWIHN staff on relevant topics.
Other Duties: Perform other legal duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Bar Admission: Admission to the State Bar of Michigan (or ability to obtain admission promptly).
Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience practicing law, preferably in the area of healthcare law.
- Experience with Medicaid/Medicare regulations, HIPAA, and mental health law is highly desirable.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Thorough knowledge of healthcare laws and regulations. Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate legal concepts clearly and concisely.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong ethical standards and professional integrity.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with a healthcare organization or government agency.
- Familiarity with the Detroit Wayne County area and its healthcare landscape.
