Responsibilities
- Review and interpret medical records to assign appropriate ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision), CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), and DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group) codes for billing purposes
- Ensure accurate coding of diagnoses, procedures, and services using ICD-9/ICD-10 coding systems while maintaining compliance with industry standards
- Prepare and submit clean claims to insurance companies using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems
- Follow up on unpaid or rejected claims through medical collections processes to optimize revenue recovery
- Verify patient insurance coverage, benefits, and eligibility prior to billing
- Maintain detailed and organized medical records, ensuring all documentation supports coded diagnoses and procedures
- Stay current with updates in medical coding guidelines, insurance policies, and regulatory requirements to ensure ongoing compliance
Experience
- Proven experience in medical billing and coding within a healthcare setting, preferably with familiarity in hospital or outpatient environments
- Strong knowledge of ICD-9/ICD-10 coding systems, CPT coding procedures, and DRG classifications
- Experience working with EMR/EHR systems for documentation and billing workflows
- Familiarity with medical terminology, medical records management, and the revenue cycle process
- Demonstrated ability to interpret complex medical records accurately and assign appropriate codes efficiently
- Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational skills to handle multiple claims simultaneously
- Prior experience in medical collections or follow-up is a plus
