Position Overview
The Cellular Technician I is an experienced-to-advanced level field technician responsible for performing and leading the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of cellular tower infrastructure. This position works hands-on in the field, often serving as a lead technician within a crew, ensuring tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with DSI standards and client specifications.
This role requires a high level of technical skill, safety awareness, and field experience. You’ll be working directly with wireless carriers and general contractors to ensure high-quality, compliant installations.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform advanced installation, maintenance, and testing of cellular towers, antennas, coax, hybrid cables, and fiber systems.
- Lead or assist in the construction and upgrading of cellular infrastructure including foundations, grounding, and equipment shelters.
- Conduct and document testing activities such as PIM, sweep, and fiber testing.
- Perform light electrical work (AC/DC systems, grounding, and power terminations).
- Ensure all tower and site work is completed safely and meets or exceeds DSI and client specifications.
- Participate in and lead Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and safety briefings.
- Mentor and train entry-level technicians in safe work practices and technical proficiency.
- Maintain detailed and accurate site documentation, photos, and closeout reports.
- Operate aerial lifts and safely perform elevated work under minimal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
- 2 years of experience in the wireless construction or telecommunications industry.
- Strong understanding of tower safety, rigging, and fall protection systems.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings and site plans.
- Ability to safely climb and perform work on communications towers and elevated platforms.
- Proficiency in using sweep test equipment, fiber testers, and hand tools.
- Experience operating aerial lifts, trenchers, and small construction equipment.
- Valid Class D Driver’s License and ability to qualify under DSI’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certifications such as OSHA 10/30, CPR/First Aid, RF Awareness, Competent Climber/Rescue, or Aerial Lift Safety.
- Familiarity with wireless carrier specifications (e.g., Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Crown Castle, or SBA).
- Basic electrical or fiber optic troubleshooting experience.
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills in a crew environment.
