Applicant lists may be screened more than once.The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Drainage Design Bureau provides analysis and design of safe, efficient, economical, and environmentally sensitive drainage facilities for NMDOT transportation projects.
The Drainage Design Bureau supports project development efforts of the Districts and Design Regions with technical expertise in hydrology and hydraulics of structures including bridges, culverts, urban drainage and storm drains, and erosion and scour mitigation. The ultimate goal is to ensure economic design, constructibility, and sustainability of NMDOT drainage structures.

Why does the job exist?
The Drainage Engineer Manager serves two roles: functioning as a contributing design engineer in the Drainage Design Bureau, and assisting in the management of the Bureau while supervising and mentoring two (2) Bureau employees.How does it get done?
The primary engineering responsibilities for internally designed projects are field investigations, hydrologic analyses, hydraulic analysis and design, model development, report writing, maintenance of Specifications and Standard Drawings, review submittals for Approved Products List, and Access Permit reviews.For projects designed by consultants the key engineering responsibilities will include coordination with the consultant on analysis and model methods, basin areas, and assumptions; review of consultant's models, designs, Plans, and Reports.
Key Engineer Manager responsibilities will include:
- Management of Consultant On-Call contracts (Task negotiation, invoice review and approval, deliverables).
- Project management and assignments, time sheet approvals, leave approvals, mentor staff, coordinate training, and review of internal engineering work.
- Development of Bureau policy and procedures.
Who are the customers?
The three (3) Design Groups and all six (6) Districts within the NMDOT. The Drainage Design Bureau also interacts with, and provides support services to, other NMDOT Bureaus such as Bridge, Environmental, and Traffic. The ultimate end-user customer is the general public.Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred experience and/or education in the following areas:* Responding to client inquiries.
* Ability to work with other teams.
* Plan set development, design, and review.
* Reviewing and writing engineering reports.
* Working with public agencies (especially NMDOT).
* Proficient in technical writing and communication skills.
* Design and modeling for both hydrology and hydraulics.
* Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines.
* Management and supervision of engineers and engineering projects.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and five (5) years of engineering experience, one (1) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Travel throughout the state and occasional out of state travel may be required. There are occasional site visits, both before and during construction, and meetings in other offices, including occasional overnight trips.Supplemental Information

Bargaining Unit Position
