Department of Public Safety – Maine Criminal Justice Academy Job Class Code: 0884 Grade: 20/Professional & Technical Salary: $20.68-$28.88/Annually Location: Vassalboro Opening Date: November 18,2025 Closing Date: December 4, 2025 What is the Paralegal at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy responsible for? The Paralegal’s position at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy is an essential component of the Academy's operation involving administrative support, management, and coordination of complaints of certificate holder misconduct and requests for conviction/conduct waivers for applicants for certificates pursuant to Chapter 3: Entrance Standards and Chapter 15: Standards of Conduct rules, and 25 M.R.S §2806-A. This work is done in support of the Academy Board of Trustees, its Complaint Review Committee, and the Board’s Executive Director / Academy Director established according to the provisions of 25 M.R.S. Chapter 341. Additionally, the Paralegal will assist in the process of managing and fulfilling FOAA requests for the agency and assisting with other Board of Trustees related work and activities. This position is vital to Academy operations and has an important impact on law enforcement and corrections agencies throughout the state. Primary responsibilities include: Researches, analyzes, and evaluates a variety of complex legal material in order to incorporate related material into draft reports and assist attorneys in completing legal casework. Interprets and explains laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to provide information, clarification, and/or promote understanding. Abstracts complex recorded instruments, records, and legal documents in order to compile needed documentation. Analyzes titles in order to determine proper parties to be compensated or notified. Drafts closing documents such as deeds, easements, agreements, tax statements, and other similar documents in order to prepare necessary paperwork for closing actions. Confers, negotiates, and/or advocates for clients, organizational representatives, attorneys, an others in order to provide advocacy, promote understanding, and/or resolve issues. Compiles and prepares complex legal documents, pleadings, discovery, notices of hearing, comprehensive findings of fact or conclusions, and other similar material in order to prepare legal case documentation and/or provide information to parties. Conducts alternative dispute resolution processes in order to reduce litigation and resolve issues. Attends administrative hearings and/or meetings in order to provide administrative support and compose drafts of legal decisions. Prepares a variety of comprehensive legal documentation and reports in order to provide draft or final document for review and/or signature. Acts as the primary point of contact for submission of conviction / conduct waivers and complaints of misconduct to the Board of Trustees in order to facilitate the Complaint Review Committee process. Manages, researches, and fulfills complicated FOAA requests in order to comply with statutory responsibilities. Assists Director and Board counsel with conduct waiver and disciplinary caseload by reviewing case materials and conducting follow up regarding needed evidence and/or documentation in order to prepare complaints for presentation to Complaint Review Committee and the Board of Trustees. Manages access and submissions to the IADLEST National Decertification Index in order to assure proper access for users and accurate information in the database. Assist with Board meetings by performing roles including Board Clerk or Assistant Board Clerk as assigned by the Director Manages all records related to Board disciplinary complaints in order to properly document and archive Board related records and actions Skills or knowledge required: Knowledge of: legal principles and practice; legal documents, court procedures, rules of evidence, and litigation practices; public records affecting titles, research procedures, legal terminology and processes; applicable state/federal statutes, case law, and regulations. Ability to: conduct legal research and analyze legal problems; prepare for and conduct alternative dispute resolution sessions; compile and prepare very complex comprehensive legal documentation and reports; understand, explain and interpret constitutional provisions, statutes, administrative regulations, and case law; establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate effectively; write clearly and effectively; provide negotiation and advocacy services; abstract and analyze complex comprehensive recorded instruments, records, and legal documents. Excellent computer/technology skills. Minimum qualifications: Training, education, or experiences in office and administrative support work that demonstrates competencies in applying a solid knowledge of the principles and practices of law firm, court, or legal services processes with the ability to research complex legal issues and analyze legal problems -OR- graduation from an approved, accredited paralegal program of instruction.
