Position Summary 

An electrician, under general supervision and at the journeyman level, assists in the troubleshooting & diagnostics, the repair and maintenance of electrical systems from raw water delivery infrastructure, water treatment plants, pump stations, and hydroelectric power plants as well as common facility low-voltage electrical systems. This role is considered a journeyman electrician with specialized expertise and knowledge of protective & isolation devices, motors, motor control centers and other electrical distribution system assets in an industrial setting. A journeyman assists Sr. Electricians in delivering projects, ensuring reliable operation of critical infrastructure coordinating work with other stakeholders to maintain safe and continuous water utility services.

At the senior level, electricians are responsible for troubleshooting & diagnostics, and the repair and maintenance of electrical systems from raw water delivery infrastructure, water treatment plants, pump stations, and hydroelectric power plants up to 13.2kV. This role requires a Master Electrician license with specialized expertise and knowledge of AC & DC systems, protective & isolation devices, motors, motor control centers, and other electrical distribution system assets. A senior electrician leads projects ensuring reliable operation of critical infrastructure while overseeing journeyman electricians and coordinating work with other stakeholders to maintain safe and continuous water utility services. 

A journeyman electrician must have a current working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). A senior electrician must also have a working knowledge of the National Electrical Testing Associate (NETA) MTS standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities   

  • Under the supervision of a Master Electrician, perform and lead complex diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair on a wide range of electrical equipment including motors, motor control centers, control systems, generators, switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, protective & motor management relays, and variable frequency drives.
  • Under the supervision of a Master Electrician, perform preventive maintenance on electrical equipment up to13.2kV to diagnose potential problems related to the equipment’s operation in line with NETA standards.
  • Inspect, calibrate, and maintain control systems including motor management relays, variable frequency drives and ensure protective devices such as relays, circuit breakers, surge protectors, motor controllers and human-machine interfaces are functioning properly to safeguard equipment. 
  • Installation and modification of electrical systems and components, including running conduit, wiring, configuring motor control centers, and integrating new equipment or technology upgrades in compliance with electrical industry best practices and standards by the National Electrical Code (NEC), National Electrical Testing Association NETA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) along with Denver Water’s Capital Projects Construction Standards (CPCS).
  • Diagnose electrical faults or system outages using appropriate testing equipment; respond promptly to emergency outages or power failures at any facility to restore functionality and minimize downtime. 
  • Implement and coordinate with other trade shops, sections or third-party vendors for testing, start-up and commissioning involved in capital and operating projects.
  • Ensure all work adheres to the National Electrical Code (NEC), local electrical regulations, and company safety policies. Conduct safety inspections and risk assessments including but not limited to lockout/tagout procedures and arc flash compliance on medium & low-voltage systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, calibrations, device setting changes and parts inventory. Assist in preparing reports with the asset management team on electrical system performance and update electrical schematics or, diagrams when changes are made. 
  • Work closely with engineers and operations to plan electrical work during facility outages or new construction. Estimate labor and material requirements for electrical projects and help schedule work to avoid service disruptions.
  • Review, revise and assist in creating Standard Operating Procedures. 
  • Must be able to perform safety sensitive functions.
  • Perform related work as required.

An Electrician Sr. will be required to perform these duties without the supervision of another Master Electrician. 

Qualifications:

Education and Experience 

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 4 years of related work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of related work experience.Electrician Sr. Only 
  • Any equivalent combination of certifications, education, or experience that provides the required skills,knowledgeand abilities for the position. 

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications 

  • State Journeyman Electrician License.
  • State Master Electrician License.Electrician Sr. Only 
  • Must be able to possess and maintain a valid Class ‘R’ Colorado driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record at time of hire. 

Preferred Skills & Competencies 

  • Troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, maintenance and installation of electrical systems,materialsand equipment.

An offer of employment may be contingent upon satisfactory results of a post-offer drug test and alcohol. Denver Water tests for the following: amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana (THC), opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP). A strength test may also be conducted due to the physical requirements of the position. This strength test may include lifting, pushing, and pulling various amounts of weight as well as crouching, squatting, and lifting one’s own body weight from various positions. If the position is deemed safety-sensitive or requires a CDL, you will be placed on the random drug and alcohol testing list, which means you may be tested if your name is selected while employed at Denver Water.
