Job Goal: 

  • To provide high quality comprehensive counseling and guidance programs for high school students.
  • To provide consultative and collaborative services to teachers, parents, administrators, and staff to support academic achievement and school success for high school students.

Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  2. Valid Alabama teaching certificate in the area of school counseling.
  3. Minimum of three years successful teaching experience.
  4. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  5. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  6. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  7. Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  8. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups, for the purpose of maximizing student achievement.
  9. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities.
  2. Conducts counseling and guidance learning activities in the classroom in collaboration with teachers for each assigned grade level during the school year.
  3. Consults with and is a resource to teachers to facilitate the infusion of counseling content into the regular education curriculum.
  4. Collaborates with middle school personnel to assist students in making a smooth transition to high school.
  5. Provides orientation activities for incoming students and their parents.
  6. Utilizes technology to plan and to provide instruction and facilitate student learning.
  7. Guides eighth grade students in the development of their high school four-year educational plans.
  8. Informs students and parents of test results and their implications for educational and career planning.
  9. Interprets group or individual test results to faculty and administration for use in enhancing instruction.
  10. Coordinates, plans, and participates in the implementation of the school system assessment program in conjunction with the principal.
  11. Guides eighth grade students in the development of their high school four-year educational plans.
  12. Conducts structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions to meet the identified needs of individuals and groups of students.
  13. Plans and conducts staff development programs and activities.
  14. Plans and coordinates the registration of students.
  15. Guides students in updating their high school four-year educational plans.
  16. Guides seniors to help them develop and implement appropriate steps regarding their post-high school educational and/or career plans.
  17. Coordinates career assessments and interprets results to students to assist in their career and educational planning.
  18. Guides all students to develop educational/career plans using appropriate career development activities and programs.
  19. Provides for the systematic and efficient dissemination of current, accurate information needed by students and/or parents as they develop their educational or career plans.
  20. Provides individual assistance to students regarding personal, social, educational, and career issues and plans.
  21. Facilitates conferences with teachers and/or parents and/or students.
  22. Plans and conducts parent education programs.
  23. Assists families with school-related problems and issues.
  24. Consults with and refers students with issues to community-based resources including, but not limited to, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, service agencies, etc.
  25. Cooperates and collaborates with other professionals in enhancing the education of students.
  26. Communicates with administrators, teachers, students, parents, and the community regarding the counseling and guidance program and its role in the educational program.
  27. Reviews the counseling and guidance program annually.
  28. Identifies student needs periodically and uses the results for program planning.
  29. Establishes a planning calendar for counseling and guidance program activities.
  30. Evaluates the counseling and guidance program.
  31. Attends staff development programs, workshops, and conferences to improve professional performance and knowledge.
  32. Participates in state-approved evaluation program as required.
  33. Actively supervises students during assigned duty before, during, and/or after school.
  34. Supervises and/or assists with extracurricular and co-curricular activities as assigned.
  35. Serves on school/system committees, task forces, planning teams, and advisory groups as required.
  36. Engages in personal professional growth, adheres to professional standards, and demonstrates professional ethics.
  37. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding student/school/workplace matters.
  38. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrators.
  39. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns, and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  40. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  41. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  42. Reports absences and take leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  43. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by the Principal.

Terms of Employment:

 

Nine, ten, eleven, or twelve-month position in accordance with the Board’s salary schedule.

 

Evaluation:

 

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance to Demopolis City Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
