Position Summary
The Structural Steel Project Manager is responsible for managing structural steel fabrication and erection projects from award through final completion. This role oversees scheduling, coordination, customer communication, material tracking, production support, and project documentation to help ensure projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
This position serves as the primary point of contact between customers, detailers, engineers, shop personnel, field crews, vendors, and internal departments.
We are specifically seeking someone with structural steel fabrication experience. Industry knowledge and practical steel experience are more important to us than a broad commercial construction background.
Responsibilities:
Project Management & Coordination
- Manage multiple structural steel projects from kickoff through closeout
- Review project scope, contracts, specifications, and drawings
- Develop and maintain project schedules and milestone tracking
- Coordinate detailing, RFIs, submittals, approvals, and revisions
- Monitor fabrication and erection progress to maintain schedules
- Identify and resolve project issues proactively
Customer & Team Communication
- Serve as the primary contact for contractors, owners, engineers, and erectors
- Lead project meetings and provide status updates
- Maintain strong customer relationships throughout the project lifecycle
- Coordinate and document change orders and scope revisions
Fabrication & Production Support
- Coordinate with shop management regarding fabrication priorities and schedules
- Coordinate material procurement, deliveries, and release schedules
- Ensure fabrication drawings and revisions remain current and accurate
- Support production planning to maximize efficiency and workflow
Field & Erection Coordination
- Coordinate with erection crews and subcontractors
- Assist with field issue resolution and schedule adjustments
- Coordinate deliveries, crane schedules, and site logistics as needed
- Support safety and quality compliance efforts
Documentation & Quality
- Maintain organized and accurate project documentation
- Track RFIs, bulletins, revisions, and approvals
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, AISC standards, and company quality procedures
- Support project closeout and punch list completion
Qualifications:
Preferred Experience
- Minimum 3 years of structural steel project management experience preferred
- Experience working for a structural steel fabricator strongly preferred
- Background in structural steel, miscellaneous metals, commercial, or industrial steel projects
Technical Knowledge
- Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection processes
- Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings
- Familiarity with AISC standards and steel construction practices
- Experience with Tekla, SDS/2, Bluebeam, or similar industry software is a plus
Skills & Abilities
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
- Proficient with Microsoft Office including Excel, Outlook, and Word
Work Environment
- Office-based role with regular interaction in fabrication shop and field environments
- Occasional travel to project sites and customer meetings may be required
- Ability to walk fabrication shops and construction sites and wear required PPE
