Introduction

The Delaware Environmental Laboratory is a full-service lab that tests and assesses water, air, soil, hazardous materials, and biological samples. The lab helps facilitate the management of Delaware’s natural resources and the protection of Delaware’s water resources.

Summary Statement

This expert level position will provide technical leadership and program management for advanced environmental laboratory operations. The incumbent leads complex analytical, biological, and chemical programs of statewide significance, exercises independent scientific judgment, and serves as a subject-matter expert for emerging technologies, laboratory quality systems, and safety. This position will represent the Department on various committees and working groups, as well as promote inter-agency partnerships and work with multi-disciplinary teams of laboratory staff, natural resource managers, and regulators. Will develop and implement complex environmental projects to evaluate best management practices to protect/remediate water quality, habitat, living resources and human health.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS For Environmental Scientist V

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Department Of Natural Resources And Environmental Control

  • Possession of a Masters degree in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  • Recognized for scientific expertise through publication in scientific and/or professional trade journal(s).
  • Three years' experience in environmental or natural resources project management such as planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
  • Five years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  • Five years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
