DNREC's Delaware Mosquito Control Section provides statewide services to more than 900,000 residents and more than 7 million visitors annually to maintain quality of life and protect public health by reducing the possibility of mosquito-borne illnesses, such as West Nile virus.

Summary Statement

Two unique seasonal Bio Aide IV positions are available for Mosquito Control:

MC Biological Aide IV ($17.00) -This position will provide a unique opportunity for the selected applicant to gain exposure in many aspects of operational mosquito control in Delaware. Employees in this position will largely work outdoors under varying weather conditions to accomplish the goals of a modern mosquito control program under well-defined guidelines. This includes but is not limited to: routine larval/adult mosquito surveillance and control (using insecticides), data collection, addressing citizen mosquito complaints, drawing blood and maintaining chicken flocks throughout the state for virus surveillance, collecting mosquito trap data, and possible operation of boats/ATV's.

MC Bio Aide IV ‘Taxonomist’ ($18.00) - The primary function of this position is the collection and taxonomic identification of mosquito specimens from a state-wide network of mosquito traps. Working both equally in the field and lab setting under a traditional stereo microscope and newly obtained AI assisted microscope, this position serves an important function within the mosquito control section. This position is responsible for the deployment and retrieval of weekly set CDC light traps and efficiently identifying mosquito species collected from them. Then entering the data obtained into an online database. The data collected from these mosquito traps serves as pertinent information for Mosquito Control management decisions regarding geographic adult mosquito abundance, species composition and trends.

  • Provides technical support in studies, surveys, inspections and research projects.
  • Collects field samples and data.
  • Provides technical information and assistance to the public and the regulated community.
  • Interprets rules and regulations for assigned area.
  • Reviews permit applications and supplemental paperwork for approval or recommendation for disapproval.
  • Operates and maintains vehicles, boats and sampling equipment.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
  • May assist in processing biological samples.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS For Environmental Control Technician II

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
  • Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  • Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  • Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Additional Posting Information

This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.

Conditions of Hire

All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle County.
