Del Valle Independent School District seeks an ambitious, highly organized, and musically elite High School Head Band Director to lead a large-scale 6A band program with a strong marching identity and a commitment to excellence at the district, region, area, and state levels. This position requires a dynamic instructional leader with a championship mindset, exceptional organizational and bookkeeping skills, and the ability to manage both the artistic and operational demands of a competitive marching-driven program.
The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of the high school instrumental music program, including marching band, concert bands, and additional ensembles, while establishing a culture of accountability, precision, and continuous improvement. This role demands excellence in instruction, logistics, financial management, and program leadership.
- Lead, develop, and sustain an elite 6A instrumental music program with a strong emphasis on high-level marching band performance
- Plan, rehearse, and execute technically and musically demanding field and concert programs aligned with UIL standards and competitive best practices
- Drive long-range program vision, instructional sequencing, and performance planning with measurable outcomes
- Prepare students for UIL marching, concert, sight-reading, and solo/ensemble competitions at the highest level
- Establish and enforce performance, academic, and behavioral expectations that reflect a championship-driven culture
- Recruit, mentor, and develop student leadership while fostering pride, discipline, and professionalism within the band program
- Coordinate all scheduling, travel, performances, contests, and special events with precision and attention to detail
- Maintain accurate and transparent bookkeeping, including budgets, purchase orders, inventories, fundraising accounts, and financial records
- Effectively manage instruments, uniforms, supplies, and other program assets
- Collaborate closely with assistant directors, color guard staff, fine arts administration, campus leadership, and feeder programs to ensure vertical alignment
- Serve as the primary liaison with band booster organizations, ensuring responsible financial stewardship and organized operations
- Uphold all district policies, TEA regulations, and UIL rules with integrity and consistency
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field from an accredited institution
- Valid Texas teaching certification in Music
- Demonstrated success teaching and directing marching and concert bands at the high school level
- Extensive knowledge of UIL rules, procedures, and competitive preparation for large 6A programs
- Strong leadership presence capable of commanding a large program while maintaining positive relationships
- Exceptional organizational skills with proven ability in bookkeeping, budgeting, and logistical management
- High-level communication skills with students, parents, staff, administrators, and the community
- Willingness and ability to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, summer commitments, and overnight travel
- Drum Corps International (DCI) or equivalent marching arts background
- Prior head or senior assistant director experience in a competitive 5A or 6A program
- Proven history of success at UIL marching and concert/sight-reading evaluations
- Experience managing large student enrollments, complex budgets, and high-intensity performance calendars
- This position requires physical stamina for outdoor rehearsals, sustained standing, and physically demanding marching instruction. The Head Band Director must be dependable, detail-oriented, and capable of managing the simultaneous musical, financial, and logistical demands of an elite program with professionalism and consistency.
