Basic Function
Under the direction of the Program Director or Site Administrator, the Preschool Teacher provides a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for young children. The Preschool Teacher is responsible for planning and implementing engaging activities that support students’ social-emotional, cognitive, language, and physical development while ensuring the health and safety of all students.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and implement age-appropriate curriculum and activities aligned with developmental milestones
- Create a structured classroom environment that promotes learning, engagement, and positive behavior
- Supervise students at all times, including during classroom activities, outdoor play, and transitions
- Support the development of social-emotional skills, including sharing, communication, and self-regulation
- Implement behavior support strategies and reinforce positive behaviors
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment
- Conduct ongoing observations of student development and document progress as needed
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and classroom updates
- Collaborate with support staff, therapists, and administration as needed
- Follow all licensing regulations, school policies, and safety procedures
- Assist with toileting, feeding, and other basic care needs as appropriate
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities
- Support transitions and daily routines (arrival, snack, nap, dismissal, etc.)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate practices
- Understanding of classroom management and positive behavior support strategies
- Ability to create engaging and structured lesson plans
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with children, families, and staff
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and flexible in a dynamic environment
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Basic understanding of health, safety, and licensing requirements
- Ability to observe and assess student behavior and development
- Strong organizational and time management skills
Requirements
- Minimum of [12] Early Childhood Education (ECE) units (or as required by state licensing)
- Previous experience working with preschool-aged children preferred
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- DOJ fingerprint clearance and background check
- TB clearance (within required timeframe)
- Ability to lift, carry, and supervise young children (up to ~40 lbs as needed)
- Ability to stand, sit on the floor, and actively engage with children throughout the day
- Strong attendance and punctuality
ENVIRONMENT:
Diversified special education classroom and other learning environments; constant interruptions. Position involves walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time; bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to assist students; reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally; hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to read a variety of materials and monitoring student activities and behavior; dexterity of hands and fingers to demonstrate activities, preparing materials, operating specialized equipment or office equipment. Position involves occasional contact with dissatisfied individuals; may experience exposure to anti-social behavior and verbally and physically abusive students; exposure to lice, bodily fluids, and communicable diseases.
