Job Description Summary

Teach Art History and Art Appreciation courses face to face or online. Typical load per regular semester would be 5 lecture classes.

The College seeks a full-time, tenure track faculty member in Art History. The ideal candidate will share the College’s commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically various student population.

Engage in the work of the Art Program including, student advising, fundraising, student recruiting, curriculum development, committee work, repair and updating of Art Foundation Lecture Hall, Student Art Association projects, Kappa Pi International Honorary Art Fraternity work, art gallery, community outreach.

Demonstrate skill, knowledge, and abilities in the teaching discipline. Teach assigned courses in a variety of times and locations in response to institutional need. Make continuous efforts to advance the quality of instruction. Develop and use a variety of teaching methods and materials to assist students who have differing educational and experiential backgrounds in meeting the course outcomes. Maintain appropriate professional relationships with students, colleagues and the community.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Ability to plan course instruction based upon approved syllabus/outline provided to insure course content and objectives are met.

Ability to teach Art courses such as Art History I & II and Art Appreciation.

Ability to utilize a variety of teaching styles and methods to accommodate various learning styles of students.

Successful experience utilizing instructional technologies, including computers, internet resources and other appropriate media in instruction.

Degree specialization and/or recent successful experience in teaching or preparation of a various range of college-level courses in Art History.

Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher.

The ability to develop curriculum, both transfer-level and electives, and teach courses for an Art major program with a focus on general education and Art History.

The ability to develop student learning outcomes and methods for assessing student’s achievement of these outcomes, as well as to ensure consistent reflection and improvement of best teaching practices.

The ability to engage and support students from a broad spectrum of cultural, religious, academic, socioeconomic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.

The enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college.

A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and the continuous reflection and development of best teaching practices for student success within the community college system.

The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote development of critical thinking skills, and encourage them to become lifelong learners.

The ability to use instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter.

The commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, and related technology appropriate to instruction as it relates to Art History.

The ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experience.

Evidence of effectiveness as a colleague.

The ability, initiative, and commitment to work collaboratively with faculty and staff in the spirit of collegiality and innovation to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success.

Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and methods which enhance student success.

Knowledge of a learning college and/or knowledge of learning communities.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctor of Philosophy in Art History.

Two (2) years of successful teaching experience in Art History I Survey, Art History II Survey, and/or Art Appreciation.

Four (4) years teaching experience beyond Teaching Assistant level.

Experience teaching college level online courses and/or documented successful training in a college online learning management system (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas and social media).

Demonstrated experience working with students from underrepresented and historically excluded backgrounds, with a strong understanding of how longstanding barriers in higher education and specific fields affect student access, participation, and achievement.

Experience and skill with addressing disparities in the classroom and on campus.

Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Art History.

Demonstrated the ability to work collaboratively with various stake holders including students, student services, faculty, professional staff, and the community.

Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices.

Successful College Teaching Experience Is Preferred.

Fully engage in the work of the Art Program including teaching 5 lecture art courses per long semester, student advising, recruiting, fundraising, course assessment, gallery operations, curriculum development, community outreach, Art Program development, Art Program Review, and NASAD Accreditation self-study writing, Student Art Association projects.

Teach both face-to-face and online art classes as assigned, including Art Appreciation, Art History I, and Art History II.

Unify the Art Appreciation, Art History I, and Art History II Curriculum using Open Educational Resources (OER).

Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course outcomes within the College grade and grade appeals procedures.

Review, evaluate, recommend, and effectively use student learning materials.

Job Duty

Provide students with a written and accessible course syllabus that follows the Course Syllabus Guidelines and facilitates a clear understanding between student and instructor of the content, goals, requirements, expectations, evaluation methods and schedule of work.

Maintain a classroom environment that promotes teaching and learning.

Hold scheduled, posted virtual or physical office hours of at least one (1) hour daily and be available for and encourage conferences with students so there is a clearer understanding of the students’ work and the possibility of improvement.

Assist in academic advising of declared majors, assist in the work of the Student Art Association, Kappa-Pi chapter Eta Omicron, NASAD self-study work, Art Program Review work, studio repair, upgrading, curricular development, and other specific assignments.

Assist with marketing programs and recruiting students.

Lead the development, assessment, and analysis of student learning outcomes in Art History and Art Appreciation.

Develop course materials and technology that will enhance Art History and Art Appreciation offerings.

Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours and utilize CANVAS to support student beyond the classroom.

Job Duty

Review, evaluate, and revise assessments of program and institutional student learning outcomes and program practices to bring about action plans devised to implement systemic improvement in programs and assure compliance with professional standards, state-mandated guidelines, and requirements of business/industry, higher education, and NASAD standards.

Collaborate in department planning, program review, and integration of courses into guided pathways, and NASAD self-study work.

Job Duty

Participate in the self- evaluation process.

Establish goals and objectives which may include personal and professional development plans in consultation with the Department Chair.

Maintain professional standards of competence in the discipline and teaching methodology through professional development/engagement activities.

Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies, pedagogy, and high impact practices.

Serve on committees.

Accept special assignments occasionally.

Participate in scheduled institutional activities which include convocation and graduation ceremonies.

Participate in department, divisional, and College meetings.

Participate in College-related activities such as registration and selection of faculty.

Participate in activities required to maintain program NASAD and College accreditation standards.

Participate in the College planning process by assisting in the formulation of goals and objectives and budget priorities.

Meet professional assignments in accordance with the College calendar.

Participate in business and/or community activities that promote the mission of the College.

Serve as a member of division and college committees, and attend regular division and department meetings.

The College offers day, evening, and online classes, faculty may be required to teach in multiple modalities.

Perform other duties as required by contract, program work, and general institutional needs in a timely manner.

A commitment to ongoing professional development including participation in an initial, year-long new faculty development program and college online training certification.

Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division and college activities.
