Job Overview
The Health Care Data Analyst is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting health care data to support clinical, operational, and strategic decision-making. This role bridges the gap between clinical teams, administrators, and information technology (IT) by transforming complex data sets into actionable insights that improve patient outcomes, optimize resource utilization, and enhance organizational performance. Serves as a point of contact in the implementation, upgrades, support, and maintenance of IT applications with particular focus on electronic medical records (EMR) and clinical focused systems.
Responsibilities
Data Collection & Management
- Extract, clean, and validate data from electronic health records (EHR), claims systems, and other healthcare databases.
- Maintain data integrity and ensure compliance with HIPAA and other privacy regulations.
· Analysis & Reporting
- Perform statistical and predictive analyses to identify trends in patient care, costs, and resource utilization.
- Creates and assists other users in development of reports to mine data from the systems, especially related to EMR and user access.
· Clinical & Operational Support
- Provide insights to improve patient safety, quality of care, and population health management.
- Support initiatives such as reducing hospital readmissions, improving care coordination, and monitoring performance metrics.
· Regulatory & Compliance
- Ensure reporting meets federal and state requirements (e.g., CMS).
- Assist with audits and quality improvement programs.
- Adheres to information systems security practices.
· Collaboration
- Work closely with physicians, nurses, administrators, and IT teams to align data insights with organizational goals.
- Reviews and coordinates updates to existing applications (especially EMR) and disseminates information to appropriate staff to properly prepare, test, and train on all upgrades.
- Translate technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations for non-technical stakeholders.
- Intermediate IT skills to assistant/back up to the Information Technologist.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills
- Proficiency Microsoft Office, especially Excel and other reporting applications for data manipulation and analysis.
- Experience with healthcare data standards (ICD-10, CPT, HL7, FHIR)
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Experience
- 1-2 years of experience in data analysis, preferably within a health care or public health setting preferred.
- Familiarity with health data sources (EHR, CMS, ICD/CPT codes, claims data, etc.).
- Prior use of Cerner EHR preferred.
Education
- Associate degree in Health Informatics, Statistics, Public Health, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
