Barback

About the Role:

The Barback plays a crucial support role within the bar team, ensuring that bartenders have everything they need to provide excellent service to customers efficiently. This position focuses on maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the bar area, restocking supplies, and assisting with the preparation of garnishes and glassware. The Barback helps to create a seamless workflow behind the bar, enabling bartenders to focus on mixing and serving drinks promptly. This role requires a proactive and energetic individual who can anticipate the needs of the bartenders and respond quickly to busy periods. Ultimately, the Barback contributes significantly to the overall customer experience by supporting a smooth and well-stocked bar operation.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years old in accordance with local and state laws.
• Ability to stand and move quickly for extended periods during shifts.
• Basic knowledge of bar operations and beverage service.
• Strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Good communication skills to effectively coordinate with bartenders and other team members.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience working in a bar or restaurant environment.
• Familiarity with health and safety regulations related to food and beverage service.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy items such as kegs and cases of beverages.
• Knowledge of different types of alcoholic beverages and bar tools.
• Certification in responsible alcohol service (e.g., TIPS or equivalent).

Responsibilities:

• Restock bar inventory including liquor, beer, wine, mixers, and garnishes to ensure bartenders have necessary supplies at all times.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the bar area, including washing glassware, cleaning surfaces, and disposing of trash.
• Assist bartenders by preparing garnishes, ice, and other items needed for drink preparation.
• Collect and clean empty glasses and bottles from tables and bar counters promptly to maintain a tidy environment.
• Support the bar team during peak hours by anticipating needs and responding quickly to requests to minimize service delays.

Skills:

The Barback uses organizational skills daily to keep the bar area well-stocked and orderly, which directly supports efficient drink service. Physical stamina and agility are essential for moving quickly between tasks such as restocking, cleaning, and assisting bartenders during busy periods. Communication skills enable the Barback to understand and anticipate the needs of bartenders and other staff, ensuring smooth teamwork. Attention to detail is important when preparing garnishes and maintaining cleanliness to uphold the bar’s standards. Additionally, knowledge of safety and hygiene practices ensures compliance with regulations and contributes to a safe working environment.
