Job Summary
The Safety Specialist works under the direction of the Safety Manager/Safety Supervisor to plan, direct, and implement the Company’s environmental health and safety programs and to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of employees and incident-free work environment. In collaboration, this role involves identifying workplace hazards, ensuring compliance with regulations, and promoting a culture of safety to prevent injuries and reduce risks. This position would also respond to emergency situations when they arise and will support EHS operations and staff to foster a culture of safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational (Day-to-Day)
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and unsafe conditions in the workplace.
- Maintain safety policies, procedures, and programs to control risks.
- Provide safety training programs to educate employees on safety protocols and best practices.
- Investigate accidents and incidents to determine their root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
- Recommend corrective actions to prevent future incidents and near-misses.
- Ensure the organization complies with all relevant federal, state, and local health and safety regulations.
- Manage and maintain comprehensive records related to safety activities, including incident reports and audit findings.
- Coordinate with other departments to address safety concerns.
- Evaluate equipment, processes, and work environments to ensure they meet established safety standards and regulations.
- Respond to emergencies and provide first aid when necessary.
- Prepare and present safety reports to management.
- Monitor and enforce the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Lead safety committee meetings and initiatives.
- Assist in the development and implementation of emergency response plans to address potential emergencies effectively.
- Promote safety awareness and foster a strong safety culture throughout the organization.
- Continuous improvement of safety program initiatives and the overall working environment by monitoring safety performance metrics and analyzing data for trends.
- Provide technical support to employees and management on a variety of safety-related issues.
Education & Experience:
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Engineering or related science field and three (3) years of experience in EHS in a manufacturing or industrial environment
- High School diploma or equivalent with (5) years of experience in EHS in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Experience in risk assessment, accident/incident investigation, safety audits and root cause analysis.
- Familiarity with industrial equipment and processes.
- Experience in conducting safety training.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, especially OSHA standards.
- Strong proficiency using safety management software and tools, incident tracking systems, and EH&S reporting tools.
- Experienced in the use of Microsoft Office 365 tools (i.e., PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
- Experience with 5S/6S methodology principles.
- First Aid/CPR.
- Experience managing multi-site locations, multi-shift, or continuous operations.
- Demonstration of minimum proficiency with the English and Spanish languages in order to ensure effective training and on-going communications about safety issues.
- Completion of specialized training programs such as OSHA 30-hour training general industry course is a plus.
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations, standards, and best practices in manufacturing or industrial setting.
- Deep understanding of manufacturing hazards, industrial equipment safety, lockout/tagout procedures, hazardous communications.
- Regulatory Compliance knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant federal, state, and local regulations is fundamental.
- Safety Management Systems - experience with safety management systems, including safety protocols, procedures, and the management of safety equipment.
Desired Certifications:
- CHST (Certified Health & Safety Technician) or OSHA certifications are preferred.
- Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST): A certification that demonstrates a foundational understanding of safety and health principles.
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP): This entry-level certification is ideal for those who have a bachelor’s degree and at least one year of safety experience.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP): Considered the gold standard in safety certification, is intended for experienced safety professionals who have built upon their foundational knowledge with real-world practice.
- Safety Management Specialist (SMS): For those with over a decade of experience and existing management responsibilities, this certification can validate expertise in overseeing safety programs.
- OSHA 30-hour General Industry Card: A widely recognized certification demonstrating knowledge of OSHA standards.
