Position Overview
The CAD Drafter (Mech/Elec) is responsible for supporting our engineering team with the structural and electrical design of custom electrical equipment. This hands-on role focuses on creating detailed 3D models, fabrication drawings, and 2D electrical schematics for custom industrial panels, distribution centers, load centers, and related mechanical systems. This position focuses on sheet metal design for enclosures, assemblies, and mechanical components that house and support electrical equipment operating in demanding conditions. This role demands strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and an understanding of the mechanical challenges inherent in ruggedized, high-voltage equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain 3D models and detailed 2D drawings for mechanical components, sheet metal enclosures, and assemblies using SolidWorks.
- Collaborate with electrical engineers to create and update 2D electrical schematics for use during assembly and provided to customers with the completed project.
- Support the design and layout of electrical enclosures, switchgear housing, control panels, and mounting structures.
- Develop fabrication drawings including flat patterns, insert tables, weld symbols, and bills of materials (BOMs).
- Perform tolerance analysis and verify design integrity through model checks and fit testing.
- Maintain and expand the drawing library, templates, and standard parts for mechanical and electrical systems.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Education: Associate’s degree in Mechanical Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field; SolidWorks or schematic certification is a strong plus.
- Experience: 5 years as a mechanical drafter or designer using SolidWorks in a manufacturing or industrial setting; direct experience with fabrication, sheet metal, and weldments is required. Mining, electrical schematics/equipment, or heavy industrial experience is a plus.
- Ability to interpret and integrate electrical schematics into mechanical designs.
- Other Requirements: Willingness to work flexible hours and travel occasionally (valid driver’s license required); physical ability to lift to 35 lbs.; commitment to safety protocols (OSHA or MSHA knowledge preferred).
