Job Summary
As the state education agency for the District of Columbia, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is sustaining, accelerating, and deepening the progress being made for DC’s 97,000 students. We work in partnership with 470 early childhood facilities, 200 schools, 60 local education agencies (including DC Public Schools and public charter organizations), and countless community-based organizations. In pursuit of our mission to remove barriers and create pathways for District residents to receive a great education, we set statewide policies, provide our education partners with resources and support and exercise accountability for all public education in DC.
This position is in the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), within the Division of Health and Wellness (H&W). This position reports directly to the Deputy Superintendent of Academics and Schools. The Assistant Superintendent of Wellness and Nutrition is responsible for overseeing statewide health, wellness, and nutrition programs that directly impact children, families, and other vulnerable populations; administering federally funded meal programs that ensure access to safe and nutritious food; managing programmatic and fiscal oversight systems that safeguard public resources; directing staff who support high‑volume service delivery to at‑risk communities; and ensuring compliance with federal and District regulations that protect the well‑being of program participants.
Duties And Responsibilities
The Assistant Superintendent of Wellness and Nutrition’s major duties include but are not limited to: Supervising nutrition services activities that come under the purview of OSSE; Managing professional and support personnel; Providing training for program specialists; Reviewing and monitoring specialists’ assignments, verifying accuracy, editing field reports, and making final adjustments as necessary. The incumbent will also promote outreach and expansion of food and nutrition programs; oversee program management activities such as claim processing, final reports, reviews, monitoring applications and agreements, and other core program activities, including health and wellness grants; provide oversight of programmatic and fiscal monitoring of health and wellness programs.
Qualifications And Education
Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, but are not limited to, providing direction, oversight, monitoring, and technical assistance to the State level administration of OSSE’s nutrition and wellness programs to ensure the integrity at both the fiscal and service delivery.

Duration of Appointment: This is a Management Supervisory Service (MSS), “At-Will” Appointment. All positions and appointments in the Management Supervisory Service serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is not covered under a collecting bargaining agreement.
Position Designation: In accordance with Chapter 4 of the D.C. personnel regulations, Suitability, this position has been deemed Protection-Sensitive. Accordingly, the incumbent will be subject to pre-employment checks (criminal background checks, consumer credit check, traffic record checks, and drug screenings, if applicable) as a condition of employment, and will be subject to periodic criminal background checks for the duration of your tenure.
If the position you are applying for is in the Career, Management Supervisory, or Educational Service at an annual salary of one hundred fifty thousand dollars ($150,000) or more, you must establish residency in the District of Columbia within one hundred eighty (180) days of the effective date of the appointment and continue to maintain residency within the District of Columbia throughout the duration of the appointment.
