Job Summary
This position is located in the D.C. Department of Corrections (DOC), Facility Maintenance Division. The mission of the DOC is to ensure public safety for citizens of the District of Columbia by providing an orderly, safe and secure and humane environment for the confinement of pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates, while providing meaningful opportunities for community reintegration.
The incumbent in this role is responsible for maintaining, inspecting, installing and repairing equipment and components used for heating, and air conditioning (HVAC). In addition, performs skilled mechanical maintenance in refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities, preventative maintenance, and routine servicing of equipment.
Duties And Responsibilities
Inspects, repairs, modifies and installs HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes. Conducts regular preventative maintenance inspections of refrigeration units and isolated heating ventilating units, which includes, but not limited to boilers, gas and electrically operated air conditioning equipment.
Reads troubleshoot repairs, and/or installs heating units and systems, including oil or gas-fired low- and high-pressure boiler, steam production or turbine and generator power plants, calibrates gauges, thermostats and thermometers. Installs, maintains and repairs steam traps, pressure-reducing valves, heat exchangers, and steam heating systems. Ensure hazardous materials and waste within the work area are handled or processed within operating guidelines, containers are sealed, properly dispose of hazardous materials or (waste) that are used at the worksite.
Qualifications And Education
ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION.
Knowledge of Equipment Assembly Installation, and Repair, etc,
Technical practices, (theoretical precise, artistic)
Use of Measuring Instruments
Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc., (includes blueprint reading)
Ability To Use and maintain Tool and Equipment
Knowledge of Materials
Licenses and Certifications
District of Columbia Master Mechanic License
Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License during employment
Working Conditions/Environment
Some work assignments are performed inside where the incumbent is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment such as heating and air conditioning systems, walk-in freezer units, etc. Occasionally, work assignments are outside on top of all building, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Uncomfortable facemasks and protective clothing may be occasionally worn when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic gases and refrigerants, chemicals, heat, steam, contact with heat system parts and unpleasant odors. May be subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respirator ailments. Exposure to repeated, prolonged o concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin and internal organs.

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 6:00 am to 2:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 10:00 p.m. May be required to work on weekends as needed.

Position Designation: This position is designated as a Safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and Criminal Background checks and Traffic Records checks (as applicable). this position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing.
