What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified Pharmacy Technician for Large Veterinary Hospital position at Davies Animal Medical Hospital?
Davies Animal Medical Hospital – Yuba City, CA
Davies Animal Medical Hospital is a progressive, privately owned small animal hospital dedicated to providing exceptional veterinary care to our patients while delivering outstanding service to their families. With a collaborative team of veterinarians, RVTs, veterinary assistants, and client service professionals, we are committed to practicing high-quality medicine in a supportive, team-oriented environment.
We are seeking a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) to join our growing team in a unique and rewarding role focused exclusively on veterinary pharmacy operations and inventory management.
Unlike human medicine, California veterinary hospitals operate under the California Veterinary Medical Board, where trained pharmacy personnel function as Veterinary Assistants while utilizing their pharmacy expertise under the direct supervision of licensed veterinarians. This allows the Pharmacy Technician to play an integral role in medication preparation, client education, pharmacy operations, and medication safety while helping ensure every patient receives timely and accurate treatment.
This is an independent, detail-oriented position ideal for someone who enjoys organization, efficiency, and maintaining the highest standards of pharmaceutical care. The successful candidate will work closely with our veterinarians, Registered Veterinary Technicians, and leadership team to oversee all aspects of pharmacy operations.
What You'll Do
- Process and prepare prescription medications accurately and efficiently under veterinarian supervision.
- Review medical records to ensure prescriptions are complete, appropriate, and properly documented.
- Provide medication counseling and prescription instructions to clients as directed by the attending veterinarian.
- Manage and maintain our online pharmacy platform and assist clients with prescription requests and home-delivery orders.
- Oversee pharmaceutical inventory, including ordering, purchasing, receiving, stocking, and inventory reconciliation.
- Monitor inventory levels to minimize shortages, expired products, and excess inventory.
- Complete routine inventory audits and provide reports to hospital leadership.
- Process manufacturer returns, recalls, and medication credits.
- Maintain compliance with federal and California regulations governing pharmaceutical storage, controlled substances, recordkeeping, and inventory security.
- Collaborate with doctors and clinical staff to ensure medications are prepared accurately for appointments, hospitalized patients, and surgical procedures.
- Communicate effectively with pharmaceutical representatives, distributors, and vendors regarding product availability, pricing, and backorders.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives designed to improve pharmacy workflow, inventory control, and patient safety.
Availability to work regular weekends and evenings is required.
Qualifications
- Current Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification required.
- Active California Pharmacy Technician registration in good standing.
- Previous pharmacy experience required; veterinary pharmacy experience is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical calculations, medication safety, dosage measurements, and pharmacy terminology.
- Strong understanding of inventory management and purchasing practices.
- Exceptional organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy in a fast-paced medical environment.
- Strong computer proficiency and ability to learn veterinary software systems.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a veterinary hospital.
- Experience with controlled substance inventory and regulatory compliance.
