The primary purpose of Davidson College is to assist students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service. The Director of Student Rights & Responsibilities is responsible for coordinating the administration of the college's student accountability program to ensure an equitable, educational, and restorative accountability process for students. Adhering to our Statement of Community Responsibility, the director provides leadership to accountability practices, developmental and educational context for student behaviors, and training/outreach to staff who facilitate accountability policies in Residence Life and other areas.

The director will lead accountability processes to assist individual students and student organizations in addressing conflict and alleged policy violations focused on student learning, parity, compassion, and fairness. Specific responsibilities are listed below. The director will work closely a variety of Student Life and campus partners, including Residence Life, Student Health and Wellbeing, fraternities, sororities, and eating houses in collaboration with Student Engagement; General Counsel, Title IX Coordinator, members of the Student Honor Council, Code of Responsibility Council, and Student Conduct Council.

The director must be knowledgeable of emerging trends and current events in higher education, particularly as they regard student conduct and restorative practices. The director is a full-time, 12 months per year, salaried position that reports to the Associate Dean of Students. The functions of the position included, but are not limited to:

  • Meet with students about alleged Code of Responsibility violations or other behavioral concerns and issue resolutions as appropriate.
  • Facilitate communication, training, and ongoing professional development with Residence Life professional staff related student conduct responsibilities. Consult with Residence Life partners on training for hall counselors and resident assistants.
  • Coordinate and provide training on Code of Responsibility and other conduct processes for students, faculty, staff, and others involved in those hearing processes. Assist the VPSL/Dean of Students and Associate Dean of Students with training for the Honor Council as necessary.
  • Develop restorative justice processes as pathways for students and student organizations to resolve alleged violations or conflicts, in alignment with the college's Statement of Purpose and best restorative practices and ethical standards.
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners-including Student Engagement, Title IX, Athletics, and others-to support investigations involving individual students and student organizations, including alleged hazing and bias-related incidents, while providing guidance and training to faculty and staff investigators.
  • Oversee the disciplinary check process, including completing student background checks and providing functional guidance to Dean of Students Office staff involved in the process.
  • Collaborate with Student Activities Office to address and adjudicate alleged violations of Patterson Court policies and procedures, Code of Responsibility policies and procedures, and other standards pertaining to fraternities, sororities, and eating houses. Advise and convene Patterson Court Council and hearing processes as appropriate.
  • Serve as the student accountability-related representative on several collegewide student support teams groups, such as the CARE team, behavioral intervention team, threat assessment team, and various annual policy review committees.
  • Serve as primary system administrator for managing the student conduct database (Maxient). Provide statistics and reports to peers and colleagues and assist with Clery reporting, biennial reviews, and other compliance reporting.
  • Collaborate with Dean of Students Office staff to schedule hearings, coordinate appeals, provide appropriate notifications, and on other logistics.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for students and families, and others, about the Student Handbook, Code of Responsibility, and other related processes.
  • Work with Associate dean of Students to annually review and update policies and procedures with changes that increase parity, clarify processes, and center student learning.
  • Respond to general inquiries to the Dean of Students Office and coordinate appropriate follow-up or referral.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for emergency response for the administrator on-call role, which includes providing guidance and support to the live-on residence life staff and students.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • A graduate degree in college student development, counseling, higher education, or a closely related field is required.
  • At least four years of demonstrated full-time experience in student conduct with a high level of interaction with a student conduct process at an institution of higher education, or a closely related experience.
  • Requires knowledge related to college student development, student conduct processes, methods of conflict resolution/restorative approaches, Title IX, and crisis management, and how to apply this knowledge to both individual students and student organizations.
  • Ability to connect effectively with faculty, staff, students, and campus partners to share the value and importance of student conduct processes as a learning experience within the college/university setting; and ability to work independently and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff, and other community partners.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience facilitating restorative justice processes.
  • Experience administering Maxient or a comparable student conduct database.
  • Experience convening or chairing hearing boards comprised of students, staff, and faculty; experience with or training on Title IX processes.
  • Experience working with student organizations in relation to student conduct processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse cultures and to students, staff, and faculty representing a variety of academic interests.
