Control Systems Engineer
On-site in either Houston, TX OR Greenville, SC
Job Description
- Provide technical engineering support and perform engineering assignments of intermediate complexity within multi-disciplinary project environments
- Analyze engineering challenges and recommend technical solutions in accordance with project requirements under the direction of Lead or Area Engineers
- Develop and review engineering specifications and design criteria
- Perform engineering analyses and calculations; specify materials, equipment, and systems; and resolve technical issues of intermediate complexity
- Coordinate technical activities with other engineering disciplines, project management teams, vendors, clients, and subcontractors
- Execute work in compliance with project quality procedures, approved scope, budget, and schedule requirements
- Establish, track, and report material quantities, analysis, and forecasting data
- Support procurement and subcontracting activities including scopes of work, technical bid evaluations, and vendor submittal reviews
- Provide construction support including responses to RFIs and field change documentation
- Perform additional engineering duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Control Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- Minimum of five (5) years of relevant engineering experience
- Working knowledge of applicable federal regulations (including Department of Energy Orders), state, and local codes and standards
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across project teams, clients, vendors, and subcontractors
- Intermediate knowledge of applicable engineering discipline codes and standards
- Ability to work effectively in compliance-driven industrial environments
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage priorities in a schedule-driven environment
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard engineering software applications
- Experience supporting Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects within commercial or industrial environments
- Experience utilizing engineering analysis, 3D modeling, and 2D CADD tools in multi-discipline project environments

- Support a broad range of Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) design activities including:
- Control systems architecture and development
- Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
- Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
- Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
- Digital systems and process controls
- Network configuration and communication protocols
- Human Machine Interface (HMI) development
- P&ID development support and review
- Routing, layout, and logic development
- Safety Integrity Level (SIL) implementation
- Procurement support activities
- Prepare and modify I&C engineering documentation including:
- Instrument datasheets
- Wiring diagrams
- Schematics
- Panel layouts
- Logic diagrams
- Cable schedules
- Installation details
- Perform sizing calculations for:
- Control valves
- Relief valves
- Flow elements
- Thermowells
- Instrumentation systems
- Create and maintain instrument indexes and datasheets within Intergraph SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI)
- Develop control system narrative specifications, cause-and-effect diagrams, and control logic documentation
- Participate in model reviews and support system integration activities
- Monitor and support DCS, PLC, and SIS hardware/software design development activities
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred
- Practical field or startup experience preferred
- Experience supporting EPC projects within:
- U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) environments
- Nuclear facilities operating under NQA-1 or similar quality programs
- Manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology facilities
- Proficiency with:
- Bentley MicroStation
- Autodesk AutoCAD
- Intergraph SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI)
- Knowledge of:
- Instrument specification development
- Control systems procurement
- P&ID interpretation and control system representation
- Control strategy development
- Instrument installation and design requirements
