Animal Care - Medical Technician

Position Summary

The Medical Technician provides medical care, treatment, and support services for shelter animals in accordance with approved protocols, veterinary standing orders, and organizational procedures. This position assists with vaccinations, treatments, intake examinations, surgery preparation, medical monitoring, recordkeeping, and disease prevention efforts to ensure the health and welfare of animals in DCHS care.

The Medical Technician works closely with the Lead Medical Technician, Operations & Medical Manager, and veterinary partners to provide consistent and compassionate care while maintaining compliance with medical and biosecurity standards.

Essential Functions

• Administer vaccines, medications, and treatments in accordance with approved protocols and standing orders.
• Assist with intake examinations, medical triage, and animal processing as assigned.
• Monitor animals for illness, injury, behavioral concerns, and changes in condition and promptly report findings to appropriate personnel.
• Assist with surgery preparation, patient recovery, and post-operative monitoring.
• Maintain accurate and timely medical records within shelter software systems.
• Collect diagnostic samples and assist with testing procedures as directed.
• Ensure treatment schedules are completed and properly documented.
• Maintain cleanliness, organization, and sanitation of medical treatment areas, equipment, and supplies.
• Follow all disease prevention, isolation, quarantine, and biosecurity protocols.
• Assist with inventory management, medication organization, and medical supply stocking.
• Safely handle animals of varying sizes, ages, temperaments, and medical conditions.
• Assist with emergency medical situations and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Veterinary technician, veterinary assistant, shelter medicine, animal care, or related experience preferred.
• Knowledge of animal handling, medication administration, disease prevention, and basic medical procedures preferred.
• Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes, breeds, temperaments, and medical conditions.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and follow established protocols and procedures.
• Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a medical and animal shelter environment and requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, cleaning, administering treatments, and handling animals of varying sizes and temperaments. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, medications, animal waste, zoonotic diseases, noise, odors, and outdoor weather conditions is expected.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds independently and heavier loads with assistance.

Authority

This position may:

• Perform approved medical procedures, treatments, and vaccinations within established protocols and standing orders.
• Document medical observations and treatment information.
• Report medical concerns and recommendations to supervisory staff.

This position may not:

• Diagnose medical conditions.
• Prescribe medications or treatment plans.
• Alter medical protocols or standing orders.
• Make veterinary decisions independently.
• Hire, terminate, or discipline employees.
