Position Summary

The Canine Care Technician is responsible for providing daily care, observation, enrichment, and humane handling for shelter animals while maintaining clean, safe, and sanitary housing environments. This position plays a critical role in supporting animal welfare, disease prevention, behavioral health, and overall shelter operations.

Canine Care Technicians work closely with supervisors, medical staff, volunteers, adopters, and other team members to ensure animals receive quality care, visitors have a positive experience, and shelter standards are consistently maintained.

Essential Functions

  • Provide daily feeding, watering, and routine care for assigned animals.
  • Monitor animals for signs of illness, injury, stress, or behavioral concerns and promptly report observations to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with animal movement, housing changes, intake processing, and adoption preparation as directed.
  • Provide daily exercise, enrichment, socialization, and quality-of-life activities for shelter animals.
  • Practice safe and humane animal handling techniques at all times.
  • Clean and sanitize kennels, runs, cages, dishes, equipment, and animal housing areas in accordance with established protocols.
  • Complete laundry, maintain clean bedding supplies, and restock animal care areas as needed.
  • Follow disease prevention, isolation, quarantine, and biosecurity procedures.
  • Maintain assigned work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
  • Assist visitors, adopters, fosters, and members of the public while they are viewing animals in kennel areas.
  • Provide accurate information regarding animal behavior, personality, activity level, and care needs based on observations and approved shelter information.
  • Facilitate introductions, kennel viewing, and meet-and-greet preparation as directed.
  • Maintain a welcoming, professional, and customer-service-oriented presence within animal housing areas.
  • Refer adoption, medical, behavioral, or placement questions requiring additional authority to appropriate staff members.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation as assigned.
  • Respond to emergency situations and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Animal care, kennel, veterinary, shelter, boarding, daycare, farm, or livestock experience preferred.
  • Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes, breeds, temperaments, and medical conditions.
  • Ability to recognize and communicate animal health and behavior concerns.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Strong communication, reliability, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to animal welfare and humane care standards.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in an animal shelter environment and requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, cleaning, and handling animals of varying sizes and temperaments. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, animal waste, zoonotic diseases, noise, odors, and outdoor weather conditions is expected.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds independently and heavier loads with assistance.

Authority

This position may:

  • Provide daily care, enrichment, and handling of assigned animals.
  • Report medical, behavioral, facility, and safety concerns.
  • Assist with animal movement and operational tasks as directed.

This position may not:

  • Make medical decisions or administer treatments unless specifically authorized and trained.
  • Approve adoptions, transfers, euthanasia decisions, or placement decisions.
  • Override supervisory, medical, or operational directives.
  • Hire, terminate, or discipline employees.
