About Dar al Islam

Dar al Islam (DAI) is a nonprofit organization based in the sweeping landscape of Abiquiu, New Mexico, that aims to be the preeminent land-based institution facilitating inclusive Islamic learning and spiritual contemplation, deeply rooted in this land, for Muslims and the broader community. DAI currently achieves this purpose by hosting retreat programming and partnerships in a historic complex that has played a significant role in the lives of Muslims in North America. DAI also intends to develop and deliver programs on the campus in the future.

Position Summary

The Facilities Manager is the on-site steward of Dar al Islam's extraordinary 1,400-acre historic campus in Abiquiu, New Mexico. Reporting to the Director of Operations, this role is responsible for the safe, efficient, lawful, and cost-effective operation, maintenance, and security of all DAI buildings, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure. The facilities manager ensures that every structure, system, road, trail, and utility meets the operational demands of DAI's retreat programming, partnership activities, and future campus development — while honoring the historic character and spiritual significance of this unique place.

This is a hands-on, full-time, on-site leadership role requiring a blend of technical expertise across diverse building systems, strong contractor and vendor management skills, supervisory experience, and a genuine respect for DAI's mission and the communities it serves.

Key Responsibilities

1. Buildings & Preventive Maintenance

  • Oversee routine and preventive maintenance of all campus buildings, including roofs, HVAC systems, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Maintain mechanical equipment and vehicles used in campus operations, ensuring serviceability and safety at all times.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously update preventive maintenance schedules and long-term capital improvement plans in alignment with DAI's Master Planning process.
  • Diagnose building system issues proactively; coordinate timely and cost-effective repairs to minimize disruption to programming and operations.

2. Contractor & Vendor Coordination

  • Coordinate all repairs, maintenance contracts, and capital improvement projects from scoping through completion.
  • Supervise outside contractors and vendors for procurement, scheduling, and quality control; hold all parties accountable to DAI's standards and project specifications.
  • Solicit competitive bids for significant projects and present recommendations for approval to the Director of Operations.
  • Maintain strong, professional relationships with service providers and suppliers; negotiate service agreements that protect DAI's interests.

3. Staff Supervision

  • Manage on-site maintenance staff and seasonal workers: recruit, onboard, train, schedule, and conduct regular performance evaluations.
  • Ensure all supervised personnel comply with applicable safety laws and OSHA standards.
  • Foster a collaborative, mission-aligned team environment and address performance or conduct issues promptly and fairly.

4. Grounds Management

  • Oversee all grounds management activities across the approximately 1,400-acre site, including landscaped areas, roads, trails, and irrigation systems.
  • Maintain the grounds in a condition consistent with DAI's standards for safety, accessibility, and the aesthetic character of the campus.
  • Plan and schedule seasonal grounds work and coordinate with contractors or seasonal staff as needed.

5. Utilities & Site Infrastructure

  • Operate and maintain all utilities and site infrastructure, including water systems, waste handling, septic/sewer systems, and power generation and backup systems where applicable.
  • Monitor utility performance and address failures or inefficiencies promptly; maintain detailed service and inspection records for all infrastructure systems.
  • Recommend and implement infrastructure upgrades that improve reliability, safety, or cost efficiency.

6. Emergency Preparedness & Safety Planning

  • Develop, implement, and regularly update site emergency and disaster preparedness plans.
  • Lead emergency response efforts on campus; serve as the primary point of contact for facility-related emergencies.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections across all buildings and grounds; document findings and remediate hazards promptly.
  • Ensure full compliance with building codes, fire codes, ADA accessibility requirements, environmental regulations, and applicable local, state, and federal laws.

7. Inventory, Budget & Capital Management

  • Maintain a comprehensive, current inventory of all tools, equipment, and supplies across the campus.
  • Manage facility-related budgets and capital requests in coordination with the Director of Operations; track expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Prepare regular written reports on facility operations, project status, maintenance activity, and financial performance for the Director of Operations review.

8. Program & Events Coordination

  • Coordinate closely with program staff, events teams, and external agencies for site access, safety briefings, and logistics support.
  • Ensure facilities are properly prepared, clean, safe, and functional for all retreat programs, partner events, and campus activities.
  • Communicate proactively with the Director of Operations regarding facility readiness, constraints, or risks that may affect programming.

9. Recordkeeping & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records including work orders, maintenance logs, safety inspection reports, vendor contracts, and equipment service histories.
  • Provide regular written and verbal reports to the Director of Operations on facility status, project progress, budget performance, and compliance matters.
  • Ensure all documentation meets regulatory requirements and is readily available for audits or inspections.

10. Additional Duties

  • Perform other reasonable duties consistent with the facilities manager role and the nature of DAI's operations as directed by the Director of Operations.
  • All responsibilities are carried out in alignment with the vision of DAI's Board and the mission for the site as conveyed by the Director of Operations.

  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience managing and supervising maintenance staff, seasonal workers, and third-party contractors.
  • Proven experience with building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing) and large-scale grounds and infrastructure management.

  • Solid understanding of OSHA standards, building codes, fire codes, ADA requirements, and environmental regulations.
  • Effective project management and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable interfacing with contractors, staff, leadership, and external partners.
  • Proficiency with facility management software, work order systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with New Mexico building and environmental regulations and rural utilities infrastructure is a plus.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
  • Proficiency in conversational Spanish a plus.

Personal Attributes

  • Deep respect for DAI's mission, Islamic heritage, and the spiritual and historical significance of the Abiquiu campus.
  • Self-directed and resourceful; able to work independently and make sound decisions in a remote setting.
  • Culturally sensitive and comfortable working within a faith-based, multicultural organization.
  • Committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable operations.
  • Available for emergency response outside of regular business hours as operational needs require.

Work Environment

  • Full-time, on-site position at DAI's campus in Abiquiu, New Mexico — a rural, 1,400-acre historic site.
  • Active combination of administrative work and hands-on outdoor and on-site facility work across varied terrain and weather conditions.
