Position Title: Library Instructional AssistantReports To: Building PrincipalThe Library Instructional Assistant position is a school year position. This role will support students and student learning primarily within the library, learning commons and/or maker spaces within the school. The Library Instructional Assistant will perform a variety of computer, clerical, and library duties, and support all students and faculty in a school.Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- With collaboration of the Librarian, facilitates learning commons, technology and/ormaker space
- Provides support for the classroom teachers
- Works independently with whole classes of students to facilitate learning
- In conjunction with instructional coaches support, foster the use of quality print anddigital learning resources in multiple formats that are reviewed to ensure they addressa diverse range of student learning and developmental needs
- Independently manages classroom behavior during library blocks
- Maintain student confidentiality
- Support students during the school day as needed.
- Performs duties such as, but not limited to, arrival/dismissal, breakfast/lunch, andrecess times
- Secure car seats and/or wheelchairs or other such devices into transportation vehicles,as necessary
- Provide classroom coverage when needed
- Hours as per contract Article 6; section 6-01 and at the discretion of the principal andsuperintendent
- Carry out other assignments designated by the Principal
- Attends monthly meetings and Professional DevelopmentProvide instruction and support, primarily in the library, learning commons and/or makerspaces, including:
- Develops and supports library skills instruction and DPS frameworks as directed bythe librarian and/or curriculum director
- Welcoming students and faculty/staff into the library, learning commons and/or makerspace
- Implementing 21st century learning skills including: creativity and innovation, criticalthinking and problem solving, communication, and collaboration
- Manages the circulation desk and implements procedures; assists students and staffwith locating and checking out books and materials
- Collaborates with computer aide to provide students and staff with onlinereference materials
- Operating, and assisting students and staff, software applicable to the library/mediacenter, including Internet, catalog circulation program, laminating machine, printer,and copy machine
- Selecting appropriate books to read to students during library classes, supporting thedistricts reading program
- Maintains the physical appearance and ease of use of the library, learning commonsand/or maker space
- Promotes digital citizenship in the learning commons environment and collaborateswith computer aide
- Assist with implementation of social emotional learning expectations
- Plans maker space activities and provides and prepares materials
- Orders, Processes and catalogs new books and materials
- Works with librarian to promote literacy within the school community, which includesbut is not limited to reading to students, working with parent groups on book fairs,book clubs and literacy celebrations, maker space activities and displays
- Work collaboratively in the selection and acquisition of material for the learningcommons in consultation with the librarian and curriculum department specialists
- Coordinates birthday book and other book donations associated with PAC funds whichincludes both ordering books from approved vendors and developing an Amazonwish list for those families who prefer to order online
- Helps conduct periodic inventories of book collection (including distribution ofoverdue notices and fees for lost books), materials, shelve books, periodicals, andnewspapers; pulls and routes materials requiring mending, binding, repairing, ordiscarding and performs appropriate action
- Performs a variety of clerical duties, including processing and maintaining librarymedia; entering records and files; maintaining schedules for use of computers, librarymedia center, books and reference materials; and assembles packets and materials forstudents
- Plans and implements maker space for students on a monthly basis
- Orders all necessary supplies for the coming school year
- Responsible for packing library for summer and opening library for start of theschool year.
- Set up and co-ordinate Literacy Week and Book Fair
Salary : $23 - $30
