General Description

The Shipping and Receiving Supervisor is responsible for overseeing organization’s shipping and receiving operations by supervising shop employees in the shipping environment. Shipping and Receiving Supervisor is responsible for promoting a safe work environment, overall training effectiveness, overseeing that all products ship on-time to customers, and overseeing receiving of products from vendors. The role includes coordinating, planning, and directing all activities involved in the shipping of goods, which also includes; planning and assigning work, implementing policies and procedures, hiring, training, evaluating and monitoring employees and recommending improvements in shipping methods, procedures, product organization and working conditions. Shipping and Receiving Supervisor must support and promote the company Vision, Mission and Values, using UPSCALE as the foundation always.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are those tasks, duties, and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the job’s purpose and objectives. Essential functions are critical or fundamental to the performance of the job. They are the major functions for which the person in the job is held accountable.

  • Ensure effective employee relations within and across departments. Provide direct employees with coaching and development. Track absenteeism and timekeeping. Maintain staff by orienting and training employees; developing personal growth opportunities.
  • Work to continuously improve processes in all aspects of shipping/receiving/material handling.
  • Create shipping/delivery plan that ensures on-time delivery for each item on the delivery schedule. This includes generating the delivery schedule for Dakotaland’s trucks and contacting outside freight companies.
  • Assist material handlers as needed to verify job travelers have been completed and quantities are accurate. This will ensure data is correct when materials are shipped or transferred to inventory. Complete necessary tasks to finish product for shipping: boxing, palletizing, wrapping, banding, weighing, etc.
  • Accurately maintain inventory locations in ERP software. Investigate and correct material issues as they are discovered.
  • Create all necessary documents for shipping. – Pack list, bill of lading, etc.
  • Create necessary documents for all products needing secondary or outsourced processes.
  • Follow accurate receiving procedures for incoming freight and product, and ensure delivery and/or notification to appropriate department or personnel.
  • Generate reports related to monitoring and documenting on time delivery; communicate findings with other management personnel as needed.
  • Coordinate pick up of customer returns and redelivery if required.
  • Notify MTU of packaging materials needed in a timely manner. Pre-plan truck space for full-truck load deliveries based on forecasted delivery schedule and notify trucking company of the number of trucks needed each day.
  • Make decisions based on the best interest of our customers while incorporating UPSCALE and Lean Manufacturing principles and values.
  • Train all material handlers (shipping/receiving staff) in safety and all requirements pertaining to the department.
  • Perform accident investigations, follow-up and take corrective action, if necessary.
Qualifications:

EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred.

  • A minimum of 3 - 5 years of inventory and production experience preferred
  • Previous management experience preferred.
  • Computer competent and well-versed in inventory management software; Microsoft office skills required. Strong written, verbal, and math/counting skills required.
  • Ability to create accountability and lead by example.
  • Be knowledgeable of safety, quality, productivity, inventory, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced production environment while displaying sound judgement and decision-making skills.

  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Normal memory, taking into consideration the amount and type of information.
  • Moderate level of complexity for decision making.
  • Work may involve lifting of materials and product up to 40 pounds. Work in this environment require the use of safety glasses and work boots.
