Job Description
The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will apply advanced mechanical engineering knowledge to support product development efforts involving heat transfer, hydraulic network design, sheet metal design, weldment design, and related mechanical systems. This role will be responsible for analyzing product performance, validating design specifications, supporting prototype development, and helping ensure products meet customer requirements, industry standards, and manufacturability goals.

The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will apply advanced mechanical engineering knowledge to support product development efforts involving heat transfer, hydraulic network design, sheet metal design, weldment design, and related mechanical systems. This role will be responsible for analyzing product performance, validating design specifications, supporting prototype development, and helping ensure products meet customer requirements, industry standards, and manufacturability goals.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Apply mechanical engineering expertise to projects involving heat transfer, hydraulic/water pumping systems, sheet metal design, weldments, and related technologies.
- Perform analysis and simulations to validate product design, specifications, and performance, including flow network modeling, computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, and failure mode effects analysis.
- Design products for ASME compliance related to piping and pressure vessels, while supporting the use of industry advancements in heat exchangers, pumps, fans, and other critical components used in data center cooling units.
- Develop and write test specifications and protocols, coordinate testing in a laboratory environment, and review test reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Partner with designers to ensure designs meet customer requirements, are optimized for manufacturability, and incorporate standard processes.
- Collaborate with project management, operations, manufacturing engineering, and quality engineering teams to simplify designs, improve manufacturability, and support project delivery on time and within budget.
- Specify purchased part requirements and work with supply chain leaders to source components for use in product designs.
- Work with cross-functional engineering and design teams to support the launch of standard and custom products from market specifications through prototype and production.
- Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to support customer engagement, industry partnerships, and product or technology expansion.
- Lead prototyping efforts and provide hands-on support as needed.
- Coordinate outside testing activities, including regulatory or third-party testing.
- Work with outside vendors to develop designs, evaluate technologies, and support product development needs.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen collaboration, reduce risk, and shorten product development cycle times.
- Travel domestically up to 10% as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
- 5 years of relevant mechanical engineering or product design experience.
- Knowledge of hydronic or water pumping systems, heat transfer, and fluid flow for cooling or heating systems.
- Experience translating customer and industry specifications into mechanical design content.
- Experience using design and failure analysis tools such as DFMEA, DFM, RCCM, or similar methodologies.
- Ability to design components and assemblies using a 3D CAD system, preferably SolidWorks.
- Strong understanding of manufacturability, product testing, prototype development, and production launch processes.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, quality, project management, supply chain, sales, and marketing.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate designs, reduce risk, and improve product performance.
- Ability to travel domestically up to 10% as needed.
- Knowledge of ASME BPV design and applications.
- Familiarity with AWS, ISO standards, ASME Section IX, or equivalent certifications.
- Experience with electrical schematics and electrical component selection.
- Experience with NPI Stage Gate processes.
- ERP system experience.
- Machine design experience.
- Experience supporting data center cooling systems or similar thermal management applications.
- Experience working with outside vendors, regulatory testing providers, or third-party testing partners.
