This senior leader will develop estimating strategy, refine estimating processes and tools (including AutoBid and SysQue), mentor estimating teams, collaborate with operations and business development, and drive continuous improvement to win profitable work and protect margins.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide executive leadership and strategic direction for the estimating department, setting priorities, goals, and performance metrics.
- Manage and mentor a team of estimators, takeoffs specialists, and support staff; recruit, train, and develop talent to build bench strength.
- Oversee preparation and delivery of complete, accurate, and competitive estimates and proposals for HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, ductwork, insulation, and controls projects.
- Ensure consistent estimating methodologies, standard assemblies, database maintenance, and best practices across the organization.
- Drive adoption and effective use of estimating software and tools, including AutoBid, SysQue, and other takeoff/estimating platforms; evaluate and recommend new technology to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Collaborate with preconstruction, project management, procurement, and operations teams to validate scope, risks, change orders, and constructability.
- Analyze bids and win/loss results to refine pricing strategies, unit rates, productivity assumptions, and contingency planning to protect margins.
- Lead bid reviews, risk assessments, and value engineering sessions to optimize proposals and identify alternative solutions for clients.
- Build and maintain relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and trade partners to obtain reliable pricing, lead times, and market intelligence.
- Prepare executive-level reporting and present estimating forecasts, pipeline status, and margin analyses to senior leadership.
- Ensure compliance with contract requirements, specifications, codes, and client procurement processes during the estimating phase.
- Establish and monitor KPIs for estimating performance, such as bid turnaround time, hit rate, and accuracy of estimate-to-final-cost comparisons.
- Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience will be considered.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive estimating experience in mechanical construction, with at least 5 years in a senior or leadership role managing estimating teams.
- Deep technical knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, mechanical systems, ductwork, insulation, and controls applications and installation practices.
- Proven proficiency with estimating and takeoff software, particularly AutoBid and SysQue; strong Excel skills and experience with estimating databases and ERP integration.
- Demonstrated track record of producing accurate, competitive estimates and winning profitable work across commercial and industrial projects.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical and financial acumen, including cost modeling, risk assessment, and margin management.
- High attention to detail, ability to work under pressure to meet tight bid deadlines, and strong organizational skills.
- Experience developing standard assemblies, unit rates, and estimating procedures, along with a commitment to continuous process improvement.
- Willingness to travel to project sites, client meetings, and vendor locations as required.
