The Tax Manager will ensure high-quality, timely preparation and review of individual, partnership, corporate, and fiduciary tax returns; provide technical research and guidance; manage and mentor tax staff; and work directly with clients to deliver proactive tax strategies and resolution of complex issues. - Provide technical tax research and guidance on complex federal, state, and local tax issues; draft memos and recommendations for clients and internal teams.
- Lead, coach, and mentor tax staff: assign work, review deliverables, conduct performance reviews, and support professional development.
- Serve as primary client contact on engagement matters: present tax positions, explain issues, recommend planning opportunities, and resolve inquiries or disputes.
- Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize client tax liabilities and identify business and tax efficiencies.
- Coordinate multi-state and international tax matters as applicable and manage compliance for sales/use and payroll tax issues when needed.
- Oversee engagement budgets, track fees and time, ensure projects meet deadlines, and support billing and client engagement profitability.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of tax law changes and regulatory developments; organize and provide internal training sessions.
- Contribute to business development efforts by supporting proposals, participating in client meetings, and identifying cross-sell opportunities.
- Continuously improve engagement workflow and quality controls, including documentation standards and review processes.
Qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
- 5 years of progressive tax experience, preferably in public accounting; prior experience in a Tax Manager or senior supervisory role is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience preparing and reviewing Individual, Partnership, Corporate, and Fiduciary tax returns.
- Strong technical knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and proven ability to perform complex tax research.
- Excellent leadership and team-management skills, including staff mentoring, workload delegation, and performance feedback.
- Exceptional client communication and relationship management skills, with ability to explain complex tax matters to non-technical clients.
- Proficiency with tax research tools and common tax software (examples: Lacerte, UltraTax, ProSystem fx Tax, or similar).
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines, and commitment to quality control.
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master of Taxation (MST) or equivalent is a plus.
- Willingness to obtain continuing professional education credits and maintain CPA license.
- Nice-to-have: experience managing multi-state filings, international tax exposure, and familiarity with accounting software and tax provision calculations.
