About the Role
We are seeking a Principal Engineer to serve as a hands-on technical leader on complex, custom automation projects. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys staying deeply involved in controls and automation work while also providing technical direction, project leadership, and mentorship to other engineers.
You will work closely with the leadership team and customers to help define system architecture, guide execution, and support commissioning and long-term system performance. This position offers high visibility, technical ownership, and the opportunity to influence both project outcomes and engineering best practices.
What You Will Do- Act as technical lead on custom automation projects, supporting controls strategy, system architecture, and execution
- Design, program, test, and troubleshoot PLC systems, primarily Allen-Bradley platforms
- Develop and support HMI and SCADA systems for industrial automation applications
- Program, integrate, and support industrial robots such as Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, or similar
- Lead or support onsite commissioning, startup, and system validation activities
- Collaborate with project managers to support scope definition, schedules, and technical risk management
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through design reviews, troubleshooting support, and hands-on coaching
- Support electrical control panel design, including schematics, component selection, and documentation
- Apply relevant safety and electrical standards such as UL 508A, NFPA 79, and ISO 13849
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes, standards, and tools
- 10 years of experience in industrial automation or controls engineering
- Strong hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and robotics
- Experience serving as a technical lead or project lead on automation projects
- Ability to troubleshoot complex systems in production or commissioning environments
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or related field
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and customers
- Up to 20% travel
