What are the responsibilities and job description for the Manufacturing Engineer (PCBA Specialist) position at CyberCoders?
Manufacturing Engineer - PCBA
Position Overview
We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer specializing in PCBA to design, develop, and optimize printed circuit board assembly manufacturing processes. This role focuses on delivering high-quality, repeatable production of PCB assemblies through process development, line setup and optimization, test strategy implementation, and continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will ensure robust manufacturability, cost-effective production, and compliance with applicable quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, qualify and optimize PCBA manufacturing processes for SMT and through-hole assemblies, including pick-and-place, stencil design, solder paste application, reflow profiling and wave solder as required.
- Set up, tune and maintain SMT production lines (pick-and-place, reflow ovens, conveyors) and associated equipment to achieve target yields, cycle times and first-pass quality.
- Define and implement inspection and test strategies for PCBA including AOI programming, ICT fixtures, functional test (FCT) development and test station integration.
- Create and maintain manufacturing documentation: process flow charts, assembly instructions, work instructions, process control plans, IPC-compliant standards and change notices.
- Lead root-cause analysis and corrective action for process non-conformances using data-driven methods (SPC, FMEA, fishbone analysis) and drive continuous improvement projects to reduce defects and increase throughput.
- Support new product introductions (NPI) from prototype to mass production; coordinate with design engineering, suppliers and contract manufacturers to ensure manufacturability and cost targets are met.
- Collaborate with quality, supply chain and contract manufacturing partners to implement process controls, audits and supplier qualification for PCBA components and assemblies.
- Train production personnel on assembly processes, troubleshooting, soldering practices and test procedures to ensure consistent process execution and transfer of best practices.
- Manage equipment selection, vendor evaluation and acceptance testing for pick-and-place systems, reflow ovens, AOI, ICT equipment and other PCBA-related machines.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and industry standards (including guidance relevant to medical device manufacturing when applicable) and support documentation for audits and certifications.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 3 years of hands-on experience in PCBA manufacturing engineering or SMT production support (Engineer required).
- Strong practical knowledge of SMT production processes: pick-and-place equipment, stencil design, solder paste application, reflow oven profiling and wave soldering.
- Experience with inspection and test methods including AOI, ICT, boundary-scan or functional test development and integration.
- Demonstrated experience with process improvement tools and methodologies (SPC, root cause analysis, FMEA, continuous improvement).
- Skilled in developing manufacturing documentation: work instructions, process control plans, assembly drawings and production aids.
- Familiarity with contract manufacturing environments and managing supplier/CM relationships.
- Proven ability to support New Product Introduction (NPI) and transfer designs to production.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Nice-to-have: prior experience in Electronics Manufacturing and PCB Assembly, Medical Device manufacturing environment, SMT Production Lines optimization, Reflow Ovens tuning, AOI programming, ICT fixture design, functional test development, Manufacturing documentation for regulated industries, Contract Manufacturing coordination, pick-and-place equipment selection, and stencil specifications.
