Machinist - Second Shift

Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Machinist to join our manufacturing team on second shift. The Machinist will set up, program, operate and maintain CNC vertical machining centers and conventional machines to produce high-quality components to specification. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-focused, and experienced in CNC machining, vertical machining centers, and production manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up, program, and operate CNC vertical machining centers (VMCs) and related equipment to produce parts within tolerances and quality standards.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions; apply GD&T principles to ensure dimensional accuracy.
• Perform machine setups including tool selection, offsets, fixturing, and workholding; verify programs and perform dry-runs as required.
• Monitor machining processes, make in-process adjustments, and troubleshoot machining issues to maintain production flow and part quality.
• Inspect finished parts using calipers, micrometers, CMMs, and other precision measuring instruments; document inspection results and maintain quality records.
• Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on machines; coordinate major repairs with maintenance personnel.
• Maintain accurate production records, including job logs, inspection reports, and material traceability documentation.
• Participate in continuous improvement activities, suggest process improvements, and support Lean manufacturing initiatives.
• Follow all safety policies and procedures, maintain a clean and organized work area, and use proper PPE.
• Train and mentor less experienced machinists and assist with shift handovers to ensure continuity of production.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; technical certificate or associate degree in machining, manufacturing technology, or a related field preferred.
• 3 years of hands-on machining experience, preferably on second shift in a production environment.
• Proven experience programming, setting up, and operating CNC vertical machining centers (VMCs) and familiarity with CNC control systems (e.g., Fanuc, Haas, Siemens).
• Strong understanding of blueprint reading, GD&T, and precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMM).
• Experience with manufacturing workflows, shop floor documentation, and quality control processes.
• Ability to troubleshoot machining issues, perform basic machine maintenance, and make necessary process adjustments.
• Good math skills, mechanical aptitude, and attention to detail.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a manufacturing environment with appropriate PPE.
• Reliable attendance and ability to work the full second shift schedule (hours specified by employer), including overtime when needed.
• Preferred: certification (e.g., NIMS), experience with Lean/5S, and familiarity with CNC programming (G-code) and CAM software.
