Position Overview
We are seeking a strategic, technically adept Director of Life Sciences to lead our engineering design practice focused on pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturing emphasizing oligonucleotide and peptide therapeutics. This senior role combines project leadership, market strategy, and technical oversight to deliver compliant, high-value design solutions for cGMP facilities. The Director will drive business development, mentor technical teams, represent the firm in industry forums, and ensure designs align with evolving regulatory expectations and therapeutic manufacturing trends.
Key Responsibilities
- Set the strategic direction for the life sciences engineering practice with emphasis on oligonucleotide and peptide manufacturing facilities, market positioning, and value proposition development.
- Lead and grow multidisciplinary engineering teams - mechanical, process, electrical, controls, validation and construction support - ensuring technical excellence and timely delivery of projects.
- Own business development activities: cultivate client relationships, lead proposals and presentations, and translate market needs (oligo & peptide therapeutics) into compelling service offerings.
- Provide technical leadership and review for facility design packages, including process flow, utilities, HVAC, cleanrooms, containment strategies, and equipment selection to meet cGMP requirements.
- Ensure designs and project documentation meet regulatory expectations and industry standards (cGMP, FDA, EMA) and integrate risk-based quality-by-design approaches.
- Develop and maintain technical and regulatory thought leadership: publish white papers, present at conferences, and participate in professional organizations to keep the firm at the forefront of peptide and oligo manufacturing trends.
- Oversee cross-disciplinary coordination with construction, commissioning, validation and operations teams to ensure seamless project execution, budget control, and constructability.
- Mentor and develop staff through training, structured feedback, and career planning; recruit top talent with specialized life sciences experience.
- Lead technical writing and review for proposals, technical reports, basis of design documents, and validation protocols to ensure clarity, compliance and client confidence.
- Monitor industry evolution - emerging therapeutic science, process intensification, single-use technologies, and regulatory shifts and integrate insights into service offerings and client advisories.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Biochemical Engineering or related discipline; advanced degree (MS/PhD/MBA) preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in life sciences facility design or process engineering with at least 5 years in a leadership or director-level role within an engineering design firm or EPC.
- Demonstrated subject-matter expertise in oligonucleotide and peptide therapeutics manufacturing (oligo & peptides market) with proven project delivery for cGMP facilities.
- Deep working knowledge of cGMP regulations and their application to facility design, commissioning and validation (FDA, EMA expectations).
- Strong technical writing skills and experience producing high-quality design documentation, regulatory support packages, and proposal materials.
- Proven leadership and people management skills with experience developing multidisciplinary engineering teams and driving performance.
- Active engagement in professional organizations (e.g., ISPE, PDA) and demonstrated external thought leadership through presentations or publications.
- Excellent business development and client relationship management skills, with ability to articulate market regulatory issues and the firms value proposition.
- Familiarity with construction industry practices, constructability reviews, and coordination during commissioning and startup.
- Ability to translate complex regulatory and technical trends into practical, risk-based design strategies that deliver measurable client value.
