JOB TITLE: Juvenile Probation Officer

EXEMPT: No

SALARY LEVEL: K

SUPERVISOR: Juvenile Department Director

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for supervising youth referred to the Curry County Juvenile Department including risk levels from low to high. Work directly with youth, family, courts, victims, and community partners to create a plan for successful supervision and reduced recidivism.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Supervises youth, presents court cases, transports, and provides guidance and counseling to youth and families to include crisis intervention. Serves as an advocate and assists youth and families with needed services, such as: medical and mental health, educational support, treatment placement, employment, and social skills.

2. Monitors youth on caseload, not limited to, day reporting, conditional release, house arrest, electronic monitor, shelter placement, treatment programs, community treatment/education programs, conducts home visits and detention. Exercises Peace Officer power and takes charge of any youth offender when required.

3. Uses JJIS as the primary case management tool and ensures all other required documentation is completed in a timely fashion: disposition reports, probation orders, assessments, case plans, and any other appropriate documentation required by State and Federal law and as outlined in the Juvenile Department Policy and Procedures.

4. Maintains working relationships with Juvenile Department staff, Law Enforcement Agencies, District Attorney, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Judges, Attorneys, State Court Staff, Department of Human Services (DHS), OYA staff, Detention Staff, Shelter Staff, schools, churches, community groups, treatment providers, victims, families, and youth.

5. Provides "on-call" services, which are after hours and weekends, as assigned to assist police or other agencies in responding to the needs of juveniles; conduct or assign courtesy supervision of juveniles for other jurisdictions as requested.

6. Assists with victim advocacy, office coverage, and coordination with department staff for assigned duties.

Position is supervised by Juvenile Department Director and requires independent work or very limited supervision.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to prepare reports; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; write and present cases in a juvenile court proceeding; develop and maintain effective working relationship with law enforcement, child welfare agency personnel, parents, juveniles, and general public; handle negative and hostile individuals and situations

· Work with limited supervision in an independent setting, while able to recognize situations in which supervision and guidance are necessary

Desirable Qualifications: Juvenile Probation Officer fundamental skills completion, JJIS (Juvenile Justice Information System) security approved and trained.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Associate degree from a college or university with major course work in social services, psychology, juvenile justice, or criminology.

2 years’ experience in juvenile corrections, Child Welfare or juvenile court work involving counseling of maladjusted youth and families (preferably in juvenile probation and/or parole), or any satisfactory equivalent of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties described above.

Possession of a valid Oregon Driver’s License and pass a criminal background and LEDS check.

Completion of Fundamental Skills provided by the Oregon Juvenile Department Director’s Association or must complete course within 1 year.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

· Normal working hours and conditions, but also subject to emergency call-out as needed to provide services on evenings or weekends.

· Work is primarily performed in office and courtroom, with a need to interact with hostile or upset individuals. Conditions can be stressful due to high emotional state of offenders and victims.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $29.36 - $34.03 per hour
