Cumberland County is seeking a skilled and experienced Fleet Maintenance Foreman to join Central Maintenance and play a key role in keeping the County’s fleet of vehicles and equipment safe, reliable, and operational. This position performs complex mechanical and advanced technical work involving the diagnosis, repair, servicing, and maintenance of a diverse fleet of vehicles and motorized equipment. The Fleet Maintenance Foreman will lead and supervise mechanics, assign and direct work, troubleshoot challenging mechanical issues, and ensure repairs and preventive maintenance are completed efficiently and effectively. This position also provides technical guidance to less experienced mechanics and expert recommendations to County staff regarding vehicle repairs, purchases, maintenance needs, fuel budgeting, and fleet operations.   • Supervises and directs assigned Fleet Maintenance Technicians, including assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance and training, and establishing performance expectations

  • Monitors employee performance and provides coaching and counseling when performance improvement is needed; coordinates with the Fleet Manager regarding hiring and disciplinary actions

  • Reviews and approves employee leave requests based on operational needs and adequate staffing to ensure fleet maintenance services and assigned work are completed in a timely manner

  • Serves as a working supervisor by diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical malfunctions and overseeing complex repairs involving County vehicles and equipment

  • Performs and oversees scheduled preventive maintenance, including brake service, belt and battery replacement, oil changes, filter replacement, muffler repairs, spark plug replacement, and other routine maintenance activities

  • Diagnoses, repairs, rebuilds, and replaces major vehicle systems and components, including engines, drivetrains, fuel systems, steering and suspension systems, electrical systems, and air conditioning systems

  • Diagnoses, repairs, and adjusts hydraulic and vacuum systems, including hydraulic motors, hoses, fittings, and power take-off units

  • Inspects, removes, and replaces damaged or worn tires and inner tubes to ensure vehicles and equipment are maintained in safe operating condition

  • Performs North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles automobile inspections and required federal inspections in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and safety standards

  • Inspects vehicles and equipment for potential mechanical problems, prioritizes repair needs, and ensures maintenance and repair work is completed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with established safety and operational standards

Graduation from an accredited two-year college or technical school with a degree including course work emphasis in Automotive Maintenance and/or Business Administration and three (3) years of experience in general automotive/related repair or service work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some lead or supervisory experience is required. 

Required at the time of Hire:
Possession of four (4) Automotive Service Excellent (ASE) certifications within the A group or equivalent
Vehicle inspector licensed by the State Division of Motor Vehicles
Certification in CFC recovery
Must supply and maintain a general mechanic’s tool set at the work site.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment

  • Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and the mechanical components of automotive and related equipment

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with equipment repair, maintenance activities, and shop operations

  • Knowledge of principles and procedures related to personnel recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, and employee relations

  • Skill in using, maintaining, and properly caring for tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment

  • Skill in diagnosing and detecting malfunctions in mechanical equipment and exercising independent judgment in determining appropriate repair or maintenance actions

  • Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, and in understanding and following oral and written instructions

  • Ability to assist, advise, train, and provide guidance to less experienced mechanics and effectively support the development of employees

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, departmental personnel, and other internal and external stakeholders while building productive relationships and partnerships

  • Ability to perform the physical labor associated with mechanical repair and maintenance work and safely complete assigned duties in a shop environment

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
