Job Title: Test Engineer (Industrial Automation)
Location: Johnson City, TN
Duration: 12 Months (Contract/Temp with the possibility of extension)
Shift: 1st Shift (Approx 8-9 AM to 4-5 PM)
Pay Range: $40/hr - $42/hr W2
Job Description:
We are seeking a Test Engineer to support system-wide and product-oriented testing of industrial automation products, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), expansion modules, and automation software. This role focuses on validating interoperability, quality, and real-world customer use cases within an industrial automation ecosystem.
The Test Engineer will work closely with development teams and customer-facing colleagues to identify issues, reproduce reported problems, and support timely resolution. This is a hands-on, onsite role ideal for candidates with a strong engineering background and experience testing complex hardware/software systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Define, execute, and document system-level and product-level test cases based on customer scenarios and workflows
Perform testing to validate interoperability of industrial automation products
Investigate customer-reported issues, reproduce defects, and collaborate with development teams on resolution
Record test results in test management systems
Document test procedures and testing outcomes
Communicate testing status, findings, and risks to the test team manager
Support development teams with testing assistance and consultation as needed
Collaborate with cross-functional and global teams
Propose and implement continuous improvements to testing processes, coverage, and assets
Automate tests where possible to improve efficiency
Follow established R&D and quality processes
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Software Development, or a related technical field
2 years of experience in testing, software development, hardware development, application engineering, or a related technical role
Knowledge of industrial automation products and applications
Experience with system testing, integration testing, or product testing
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Ability to document test cases, procedures, and results clearly
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, testers, and customer-facing teams
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and results-driven
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of the product development lifecycle
Familiarity with agile methodologies
Knowledge of test methodologies and best practices
Experience with industrial automation technologies such as: PLCs, HMI systems, OPC UA, PROFINET or other industrial communication protocols
Experience with PLC programming languages (e.g., LAD, SCL)
Programming experience with C# or similar languages
Experience with test automation frameworks (e.g., NUnit, MS Test)
Experience with source control tools (e.g., Git, TFS)
Knowledge of industrial safety systems (Failsafe PLCs, PROFI SAFe)
