Physical Therapist Assistant

Position Title: Physical Therapist Assistant
Department: Rehabilitation Services
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Position Summary

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) provides skilled physical therapy services under the direction and clinical supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist (PT). The PTA implements individualized treatment plans designed to improve mobility, functional independence, strength, balance, endurance, and overall quality of life for patients and residents. The setting includes short-term rehabilitation, outpatient therapy and long-term care.

Responsibilities include carrying out therapeutic interventions, gait training, transfer training, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, balance activities, functional mobility training, and other treatment interventions as outlined in the plan of care. The PTA monitors patient progress, communicates changes in condition to the supervising Physical Therapist, and documents treatment in accordance with professional standards, regulatory requirements, and facility policies.

The PTA provides age-appropriate, patient-centered care while promoting a safe, compassionate, and respectful environment. As a representative of Cuba Memorial Hospital (CMH), the PTA demonstrates professionalism and promotes CMH positively within the organization and throughout the community.

Essential Responsibilities

· Implement physical therapy treatment plans established by the supervising Physical Therapist.

· Provide skilled physical therapy interventions including therapeutic exercise, gait training, balance training, neuromuscular re-education, transfer training, therapeutic activities, and functional mobility training.

· Assist patients in improving strength, endurance, balance, coordination, mobility, and overall functional independence.

· Observe, monitor, and report patient responses, progress, and changes in condition to the supervising Physical Therapist.

· Accurately document treatments, patient progress, and communication in accordance with regulatory and facility requirements.

· Maintain a safe treatment environment and follow infection prevention and safety practices.

· Collaborate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, rehabilitation professionals, and other interdisciplinary team members.

· Educate patients, families, and caregivers regarding prescribed exercises, mobility techniques, safety precautions, and home exercise programs as directed by the supervising Physical Therapist.

· Participate in interdisciplinary care planning, departmental meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.

· Maintain current knowledge of evidence-based physical therapy practices and regulatory standards.

· Promote CMH in a positive and professional manner within the facility and the community.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Training, and Experience

· Associate degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.

· Current New York State licensure/registration as a Physical Therapist Assistant.

· Experience in skilled nursing, outpatient rehabilitation, acute care, or hospital rehabilitation is preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Knowledge of physical therapy principles, treatment techniques, and documentation standards.

· Ability to safely perform direct patient care.

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

· Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

· Excellent organizational and time management skills.

· Ability to adapt to changing patient needs and priorities.

· Basic computer skills and proficiency with electronic medical records preferred.

· Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, squat, and reach throughout the workday.

· Ability to safely transfer, reposition, and assist patients using proper body mechanics and mechanical lifting equipment.

· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and greater weights with assistance.

· Ability to push and pull wheelchairs, stretchers, and rehabilitation equipment.

· Ability to perform repetitive upper extremity movements and fine motor tasks.

· Ability to respond appropriately during emergency situations.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May provide direction and oversight to Rehabilitation Aides, Therapy Technicians, Patient Care Technicians, and students as assigned.

Pay: $35.00 - $40.00 per hour
