Job Summary:

The University of Colorado Anschutz College of Nursing is seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE) University Staff (non-classified) Doula to support the CU College of Nursing Doula Program across clinical and community-based settings. The CU College of Nursing is launching its new practice to support patients birthing at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital. The doula will have the opportunity to participate in building and growing the practice to reach more families.

The Doula provides non-medical emotional, physical, and informational support to pregnant, birthing, and postpartum individuals and their families. This role serves as a member of the interdisciplinary care team and collaborates with midwives, nurses, physicians, and other professionals to promote safe, respectful, and patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities (All Levels):

Clinical and Patient Care (75%)

  • Provide continuous, one-on-one emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum.

  • Provide non-medical comfort measures during labor, including positioning, breathing techniques, touch, and movement.

  • Support patients in informed decision-making and facilitate communication with healthcare providers.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support a positive and respectful birth experience.

  • Provide prenatal education and postpartum support, including newborn care and recovery.

  • Assist with breastfeeding initiation and early infant feeding support.

  • Provide support to partners and families during labor and postpartum recovery.

  • Offer emotional support and assist patients in processing their birth experience.

  • Promote culturally responsive and trauma-informed care practices.

  • Maintain adherence to the scope of practice for doulas.

Customer Service and Outreach (15%)

  • Provide compassionate, respectful, and culturally responsive service to patients and families.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and care team members.

  • Respond to inquiries regarding program services.

  • Foster a welcoming environment for individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Conduct outreach and engagement to connect patients to doula services.

  • Identify barriers to care and connect patients to appropriate resources.

Administrative (10%)

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of services provided.

  • Utilize electronic health record systems (EPIC) and/or tracking tools for documentation and reporting.

  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of patient interactions.

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient health information in accordance with HIPAA.

  • Participate in trainings, team meetings, and program-related activities.

At Level III, duties are similar to those performed at Level II, but decisions are made with a considerable degree of independence. Although positions follow established work processes, they have the authority to determine the procedures required to accomplish the work. Positions use judgment on an ongoing basis to select the most appropriate guidelines and adapt them to develop work procedures that accomplish tasks.

Clinic Description:

Sheridan Health Services is a multi-site, nurse-managed federally qualified community health center, funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of Primary Health Care, and is a collaborative effort between the College of Nursing and the Sheridan School District. The clinic serves community health needs primarily for residents of Arapahoe, Denver, and Jefferson counties and is located in southwest Denver on the Fort Logan campus. It provides services to adults and children, 65% of whom identify as Latinx, and 42% of whom are best served in another language, with Spanish being the predominant second language. Services offered include primary care across the lifespan; prenatal and postpartum, women's health, dentistry, pharmacy, behavioral health, and outpatient substance use treatment. Sheridan Health Services is a Patient-Centered Medical Home and upholds a model of care that places the patient at the center, incorporating the values and beliefs of the patient in all decision-making.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Level II:

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).

  • One (1) year of experience as a working doula (or equivalent) supporting pregnant and postpartum individuals and families in a hospital, clinic, and/or community-based settings.

Level III:

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).

  • Two (2) years of experience as a working doula (or equivalent) supporting pregnant and postpartum individuals and families in a hospital, clinic, and/or community-based settings.

Substitution (All Levels):

  • Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications (All Levels):

  • Three or more (3 ) years of experience working as a doula (or equivalent).

  • Certification as a Birth Doula and Postpartum Doula.

  • Experience utilizing English and a secondary language on a daily basis to communicate clinical terminology.

  • Experience working with medically underserved populations.

Conditions of Employment (All Levels):

  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship. We are unable to provide work visa sponsorship or employment authorization for this position now or in the future.

  • Must be willing and able to complete a recognized doula training program (birth and postpartum) within six (6) months of hire.

  • Must be willing and able to obtain current BLS/CPR certification by the date of hire.

  • Must be willing and able to remain credentialed and ensure credentialing materials stay current.

  • Must be willing and able to work evenings, nights, weekends, and on-call shifts.

  • Must be able to work in a normal client care environment with some exposure to biological hazards and infectious diseases.

  • Must be able to travel locally.

  • Must be willing to complete MHFA training.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:

  • Level II: $44,256 to $48,684

  • Level III: $46,464 to $51,114

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
