Reliability/Environmental Test Engineer

Role Overview

Note: This role requires the use of a personal vehicle to travel to and from test labs around the Mountain View area during working hours.

The Environmental Test Engineer serves as the critical link between internal engineering design and validation. This high-impact role is responsible for the end-to-end execution of internal and third-party testing while acting as the primary hands-on owner of test setup, execution, teardown, and reporting.

You will troubleshoot hardware setups in real time and translate complex engineering requirements into standardized test procedures, including equipment and device build guides. You will serve as the "Source of Truth" to ensure tests are executed with the same precision across all sites.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Writing & Knowledge Management

• Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Author, standardize, and maintain high-fidelity documentation for testing, including vibration, thermal stress, and other product integrity and reliability tests.
• Setup & Equipment Build Guides: Create visual, step-by-step assembly manuals for devices under test (DUTs) and test equipment setups to ensure external labs mirror internal configurations exactly.
• Debug Documentation: Develop comprehensive "If/Then" troubleshooting trees for engineers and lab technicians to minimize downtime during off-hours or night shifts.
• Reporting: Translate raw test data and daily "lab-speak" into clear, concise, high-level status reports for teammates, stakeholders, and leadership.

Technical Execution & Coordination

• Own Testing: Build test setups and rigs to support test requirements and manage the day-to-day tasks required for testing.
• Real-Time Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve logistical or technical bottlenecks immediately to prevent schedule slippage.
• Effective Communication: When blocked, document and clearly articulate issues to bring in team support and request necessary resources while planning, setting up, executing, and tearing down tests.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Build relationships with internal cross-functional staff and external test lab employees.
• Test Schedule Management: Work with the test team, including the test coordinator and technical program managers, to communicate and manage changes to the planned schedule.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Experience & Technical Background

• 5 years of experience in a lab or hardware testing environment.
• Proven experience drafting:
• Test Plans
• Equipment Build Guides
• Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Ability to interpret CAD drawings and electrical schematics to create assembly instructions.
• Hands-on experience using:
• Vibration shakers
• Thermal chambers
• Liquid chillers/heaters
• Instrumentation
• Other essential lab tools and equipment

Driving & Onsite Requirements

• Must have access to and be able to use a personal vehicle for work-related travel.
• Work onsite approximately 5 days per week, or
• Drive to and work from external test labs located within approximately 50 miles of the office area, including locations such as Fremont and San Jose.
