Director of Supply Chain and Planning
This is a salaried exempt position.
Pay: Annual Salary Range $110,000 - $130,000 DOE
Location: Wenatchee, WA
The Director of Supply Chain and Planning is a senior leadership role responsible for end‑to‑end supply chain execution and production planning for an apple sorting and packing operation. This role oversees purchasing, production planning, Cold Atmosphere (CA) fruit coordination, logistics, and offline slice‑grade apple purchasing to support operational efficiency, customer fulfillment, and financial performance.
As a member of the leadership team, this position plays a critical role in aligning supply, capacity, inventory, and demand to ensure the overall success of the operation.
This position does not manage field‑sourced raw fruit acquisition or orchard contracting.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operational Oversight
- Serve as a key member of the facility leadership team, contributing to strategic planning, budgeting, KPI development, and operational decision‑making.
- Partner closely with Operations, Sales, Quality, Finance, and Food Safety to drive execution and continuous improvement.
- Provide leadership to supply chain, planning, and logistics teams through clear expectations, accountability, and performance management.
Production Planning & Inventory Management
- Lead short‑ and long‑range production planning for apple sorting, packing, storage, and shipment activities.
- Translate sales forecasts and customer commitments into executable pack plans aligned with capacity, labor availability, and inventory positions.
- Optimize grade allocation, pack style mix, and inventory turns to reduce shrink, rehandling, and aging.
- Coordinate planning adjustments based on quality outcomes, storage performance, and operational constraints.
CA (Cold Atmosphere) Fruit Coordination
- Oversee coordination of CA (Cold / Controlled Atmosphere) fruit inventory to ensure orderly releases aligned with production schedules and customer demand.
- Partner with Quality and Operations to manage storage life, condition assessments, and release timing.
- Ensure accurate tracking, documentation, and reporting of CA fruit movement and utilization.
- Support margin optimization through effective grade and storage utilization decisions.
Purchasing & Offline Slice‑Grade Purchases
- Manage purchasing of packaging materials, consumables, and production‑related supplies.
- Oversee procurement of offline slice‑grade apple purchases, including supplier coordination, pricing, quality specifications, and delivery scheduling.
- Ensure slice‑grade purchases meet food safety, quality, and customer requirements.
- Monitor supplier performance and manage costs in alignment with budget targets.
Logistics & Distribution
- Lead logistics strategy for inbound materials and outbound finished goods.
- Manage relationships with freight carriers, cold storage providers, and logistics partners.
- Optimize freight spend while maintaining service levels and on‑time delivery performance.
Oversee issue resolution related to claims, delays, detention, and service failures.
Systems, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure supply chain activities comply with food safety, traceability, customer, and regulatory requirements.
- Leverage ERP and planning systems for demand forecasting, inventory control, and production visibility.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on cost control, service performance, and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Operations, Business, Agriculture, or a related field or equivalent education/experience.
- 5 years of progressive experience in supply chain, planning, or operations leadership within produce, food manufacturing, or agricultural packing operations.
- Strong understanding of apple packing operations, grades, storage, and cold‑chain logistics.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross‑functional teams and manage complex planning environments.
Preferred
- Experience with CA storage and fresh fruit packing environments.
- ERP/MRP planning system experience.
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement training.
- Experience supporting value‑added or processing‑grade fruit channels.
