What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Mentor, Alpha - $100,000/year USD position at Crossover?
- On-site in Brownsville, TX (relocation support provided)
- $100,000 annual salary paid weekly, plus health benefits
At Alpha, academic instruction is delivered through software. Adaptive applications guide each learner through content at an individualized pace. No classroom lectures, no take-home assignments, no grading papers. This frees your time for the work that truly transforms lives: facilitating life skills workshops where high schoolers develop public speaking ability, concentration, and feedback literacy, then providing one-on-one coaching to sustain their motivation and achieve their learning targets. Half your day involves facilitating group sessions. The other half is spent face-to-face with individual students, leveraging Coachbot data to pinpoint exactly where they're struggling and uncover the underlying reasons.
Following each workshop, your students will complete a mastery-based evaluation. 90% or more should provide positive ratings of your work. 100% should be progressing through their applications. These aren't stretch goals; they're minimum expectations. Upholding rigorous standards demonstrates your confidence in their capacity to succeed. Throughout this process, you'll develop expertise in designing workshops that captivate teenagers, mastering advanced learning technology, and forging meaningful relationships with students and their families. Our Brownsville location is adjacent to SpaceX. The cutting edge of education intersects with the cutting edge of aerospace, and you'll be the person fulfilling Alpha's fundamental commitment: students who are passionate about school, accelerate their learning by a factor of two, and acquire capabilities that translate to real-world success. If you've been searching for a school that operates according to your vision of what education should be, you've found it.
What You Will Be Doing
- Facilitating one-hour life skills workshops for high school students covering topics such as public speaking, concentration, and feedback exchange, followed by evaluating mastery via structured Test2Pass assessments
- Conducting daily motivation sessions that use Coachbot analytics to engage individual students, diagnose obstacles in their learning applications, and help them overcome resistance
- Co-creating personalized motivational approaches with students, incorporating rewards and incentives that fuel independent advancement through their academic applications
- Preparing by reviewing curriculum and lesson materials prior to each session, then adjusting your approach based on student engagement and group dynamics
- Instructing academic content. Software manages mathematics, literacy, and all other subject areas.
- Overseeing school operations or supervising staff. No budget responsibilities, no recruitment duties, no administrative meetings; your sole priority is the students in your cohort.
- Enforcing discipline through conventional authority structures. No detention assignments, no suspension decisions, no "do it because I'm telling you to." You rely on reasoning and positive reinforcement to create a respectful, energized learning environment.
Develop a cohort of high school students who are enthusiastic about school, accelerate their learning by 2x through adaptive software, and achieve mastery in practical life skills.
