Position Overview

The position is ultimately responsible for leading and managing the asphalt production, paving and construction operations in all aspects of safety, operations, sales, finance, quality control, equipment and critical support functions with primary responsibility for ensuring effective execution of company operational performance and growth strategy. This position will manage the primary responsibilities for ensuring the effective execution of asphalt operations. Competency requirements include business acumen, customer focus, developing direct reports, driving for results, strategic agility and building effective teams. The preferred candidate can lead and motivate within a safe team environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote a safe working culture for all employees; work with safety and field personnel to minimize risk and increase safety for employees at all times.
  • Responsible for daily operations including safe production, quality, customer focus and maintaining the integrity of the safety and environmental systems within the Company’s asphalt operations
  • Manage, develop and retain high-performing employees
  • Supervise and provide managerial oversight to the entire asphalt team/operations
  • Drive operational performance and improvements to meet or exceed company goals
  • Generate and manage the operating budget for the fiscal year under the direction of the Company President
  • Provide leadership and direction to ensure efficiency, quality, service, and cost-effective management of resources
  • Build effective teams
  • Ensure that all crews have the tools and training to operate safely at all times and that all federal, state and local laws concerning safety, environment and other applicable areas are adhered to
  • Monitor/control construction through administrative direction of the superintendents to ensure projects are built safely, on schedule and within budget; investigate potentially serious situations and implement corrective measures
  • Provide advice and support to team during the job bidding process
  • Management of Capital Expenditure projects for assigned area
  • Work with Company President to establish long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies
  • Provide leadership and direction in sales and marketing efforts resulting in maximum product sales, meeting or exceeding customer expectations, and driving maximum profitability
  • Lead team in personal performance management, training and development, succession planning and effective recruiting and hiring
  • Utilize performance management skills, communication and knowledge to ensure financial success, safety awareness, and operational excellence.
  • Challenge and hold team members accountable to deliver results.
  • Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required
  • Other duties as may be assigned
Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or related experience with a minimum of 10 years of Construction Management, Engineering, Business Management, or other related discipline and/or equivalent combination of knowledge, skills and abilities (experience required). Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience managing P&L responsibility preferred.
  • Experience in mining, construction or manufacturing.
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required
  • Eight to ten years in a management role within the construction industry preferred

  • Ability to prepare annual budgets and work with and/or administer budget; ability to answer questions and present financial data to leadership
  • Knowledge and understanding of functional areas within asphalt operations
  • Ability to drive change and sell new concepts and approaches through persistence, self-motivation, energy, tenacity, follow-through, and commitment
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Understands how overall business works (High Business Acumen)
  • Strategic visionary with sound technical skills, analytical, good judgment and strong operational focus
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution
  • High standards of ethics, integrity and trust
  • Strong work ethic and high standards for safety in the workplace
  • Must be available as needed during non-traditional work hours
  • Excellent influencing skills
  • High drive to deliver results
  • Desire to drive high level of engagement across business
Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.

  • Able to safely drive a vehicle for long periods of time
