Performs semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation grounds, facilities, and equipment. Park maintenance staff leads or participates in all projects at our parks. These positions are responsible for the first impression of our parks to include safety and cleanliness. 

Performs semi-skilled to skilled maintenance work for the Parks and Recreation Department. Work involves maintaining park structures and facilities, performing grounds maintenance, cleaning debris and litter, preparing athletic fields, etc. Employee is also responsible for operating and maintaining heavy equipment and overseeing activities of part-time personnel. Work is performed independently and is evaluated by observation and the quality of completed assignment.  Reports to the Assistant Director.


  • Improves and maintains our park facilities to include baseball, softball, football, and soccer fields. 
  • Maintains several recently added facilities including walking trails, sand volleyball courts, disc golf, tennis courts and outdoor fitness equipment. 
  • Leads or participates in project work to include developing walking trails, installing swing sets, goals posts, creating play spaces and parking areas.  
  • Maintains grounds; prunes, trims hedges, trees and bushes; mows grass; applies herbicides, pesticides and fertilizer as necessary; operates string trimmers.
  • Performs all routine maintenance of equipment to include changing oil, replacing parts and any belt work.  Our maintenance technicians service all park related equipment.  
  • Repairs and paints park facilities, buildings, and playground fixtures; performs minor electrical and mechanical maintenance, plumbing, carpentry, etc.
  • Maintains Forklift certification to assist with all County related disaster relief efforts.  
  • Maintains records of all safety checks including ladder, fire extinguishers, eye wash stations and is the primary on safety of all facilities in their section.  
  • Communicates frequently with the general public, contractors, league officials, tournament officials at our parks which requires department knowledge and considerable tact in dealing with the public.
  • Retrieves equipment necessary for days' work and loads or oversees loading on work trucks.
  • Operates heavy equipment, such as tractors, front-end loaders, backhoe, riding mowers, etc.
  • Prepares simple records of work performed.
  • Assists with the supervision of part-time maintenance technicians.
  • Prepares athletic fields for competition: lines ball fields, mows grass, sets up bleachers, goal posts etc.
  • Picks up debris and litter and hauls it to specified dump site.
  • Oversees community service personnel.
  • Responsible for off-site parks
Graduation from high school and some experience in general building, grounds and facilities maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in basic grounds and facilities maintenance operations.  
Working knowledge of the geographical layout of the County's parks and recreation facilities.
Working knowledge of the occupational hazards of assigned maintenance work and the associated safety precautions.
Ability to operate heavy equipment, lawn mowers, power tools and hand tools.
Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions. 
Ability to understand oral and written instructions. 
Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Possession of a North Carolina Public Pesticide Operator’s License
Assists program personnel in recreational activities. 
Performs other related work as required.
May be required to serve during times of disaster.

Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including mechanics tools, carpentry tools, electrical tools, plumbing tools, welding equipment, painting equipment, etc. Must be able to operate specialized recreation equipment such as gymnasium, athletic field and swimming pool equipment. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Physical demand requirements are those for Heavy Work.
