What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Sheriff Corporal - School Resource Officer position at Craven County?
Maintains order on school campus with the legal authority to arrest if required. Act as a teacher in areas of law enforcement education that can be applied in the classroom. The School Resource Officer (SRO) will be a positive law enforcement role model by listening to and assisting students with various problems.
An employee in this class will be responsible for diverting minor law infractions through the school disciplinary avenues and parent counseling as opposed to sending the offender into the criminal court system. The SRO will develop various classroom presentations on a variety of subjects ranging from substance abuse, violence prevention, motor vehicle law and safe driving, decision-making, and responsible behavior.
The SRO will be available to the faculty of their school to address students in the classroom when requested. The SRO should be an officer who can effectively work with youth and is able to establish trusting relationships with students through support, counseling, and mentoring. Protects the lives and property of the citizens of Craven County. Patrols Craven County schools to detect and deter crime; responds to calls for assistance at their school; conducts preliminary investigations of crimes and complaints that occur on school property; and detects unusual conditions that may occur at their school.
Enforces federal, state, and local laws, assist school officials with enforcement of applicable board of education policies and administrative regulations within reason. Determine and initiate proper procedures for court appearances and proceedings, if necessary, attend court proceedings as necessary or directed.
Seeks juvenile petitions, secure custody orders, or involuntary commitment orders when necessary. Meet with and maintain good working relations with Juvenile Court Counselors. Answer questions related to the North Carolina Juvenile Code and North Carolina laws.
Assists law enforcement officers from other agencies with their investigations concerning students attending the school where the SRO is assigned.
Notifies a supervisor immediately regarding any potential or dangerous incident that does or may occur on school property. Examples are threats of, or actual school shootings, weapons on school property including buses, assaults, bomb threats, threats related to social media, etc.
Maintains effective communication with school officials and supervisors through radio communication or telephone when necessary.
Works at special events and provides security for those events occurring on school property. SRO’s may be expected to determine if additional resources are needed for special events through proper evaluation and communication with school officials and supervisors. SRO’s will assist school officials with the coordination of special events as necessary or when requested.
Attends annual training and periodic (monthly) briefing sessions. Annual training shall provide SRO’s with training for working in schools, such as updates in school law, as well as basic law enforcement and firearms training.
D.A.R.E. Instructor
Performs specialized law enforcement work in teaching the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) curriculum and program to school children.
Performs special D.A.R.E. training in public schools; prepares lesson plans and conducts classes; plans and conducts special events associated with student life.
Organizes special recognition programs for students participating in or graduating from D.A.R.E. programs.
Interacts with students on and off school campus to build effective relationships.
Plans, organizes, and participates in D.A.R.E. fund-raising events.
Prepares student materials using computers and other teaching aids in accordance with the D.A.R.E. curriculum.
Speaks to various community groups on topics of crime prevention, drug abuse prevention, and other topics; organizes and implements various crime prevention programs in the school setting.Graduation from high school and possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate.
One year of experience in law enforcement work; or an equivalent combination of experience and training is preferred.
Special Requirements
Certification as a law enforcement officer and completion of all requirements set in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.The SRO will be assigned full-time to a school during the school year and is expected to work forty (40) hours per week and will be assigned specific duties and responsibilities by the principal of the school. On a typical day, the SROs shall be on duty at an assigned school(s) from approximately thirty (30) minutes before the beginning of the student instructional day until approximately thirty (30) minutes after the end of the student’s school day unless modified. Any remaining time of the SRO’s forty (40) hour typical work week shall be used to provide after-school and/or evening security at school events or other assignments as determined by school administrators or supervisors.
The SRO will always appear in uniform when on campus. The SRO will remain on the school campus during relevant hours. Absence from campus during school hours shall only be for official business and after giving notification to school administrators and supervisors.
The SRO will not be utilized as a school disciplinarian; however, they may assist school administrators in these duties as requested. The SRO will counsel with students as needed, or when requested by school officials or parents and may initiate conflict resolution with students, parents, and teachers by working closely with school officials and administrators.
Although the SRO is assigned to work at a particular school, an SRO is a deputy sheriff and may be called upon to perform other duties or attend training that would require them to be away from school. This will be done at the direction of the Sheriff, Chief Deputy, or Special Operations Captain.

Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including firearms, restraint devices, two-way radios, audio, and visual surveillance equipment, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 55 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work may involve walking, standing, running and physical confrontation. Physical demand requirements are for Medium to Heavy Work.
