## Occupational Summary

The Dean of Health Sciences leads the Colleges efforts to educate the healthcare workforce and enhance the profile, visibility, and effectiveness of health programs in support of College goals and objectives. This position provides leadership, management, and support for program directors, instructional support, faculty, and curricula. The Dean fosters a high-quality environment of academic teaching and intellectual achievement, and creates and strengthens partnerships within and outside of the College as a strong advocate. The Dean shapes, cultivates, and implements a strategic vision for the nursing and allied health departments and serves on the Instructional Leadership Team.

## Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements a vision for the Health Sciences Learning Center; develops and oversees the budget and management of day-to-day operations
  • Leads, develops, coordinates, and supervises degree offerings assigned to the area to maintain compliance with credential verification, accreditation agencies, college policies and procedures, and other governing agencies
  • Leads the selection, orientation, training, mentoring, support, and supervision for full-time faculty (where applicable), adjunct faculty, instructional assistants, student workers, and other employees assigned to the Center
  • Manages and evaluates FTE generation and faculty course load
  • Oversees the assessment and continuous improvement of curricula, materials, and delivery, ensuring that state-of-the art methods and materials are used, and that academic standards are upheld
  • Supports the development and growth of current and future health science programs, by supporting their strategic goals, active recruitment, program development, and monitoring program enrollment
  • Keeps the Associate Vice President for Instruction informed regarding changes in the healthcare industry and the health disciplines and recommends programmatic interventions accordingly
  • Coordinates media, supply, and equipment orders and procurement
  • Assesses and communicates professional development needs to the Center for Teaching and Learning
  • Oversees course scheduling to support student-centered scheduling ensuring the efficient use of classroom space, working collaboratively with the other Deans and the Registrar
  • Coordinates the development and accomplishment of individual group and Center short and long-term goals
  • Represents the College and Health Sciences by participating in and communicating effectively with relevant community and professional organizations and agencies and student recruitment opportunities
  • Coordinates and oversees management of Center resources, including rooms, buildings, equipment, and supplies
  • Oversees the review and evaluation of instructional materials, including syllabi and other documents, ensuring continuous improvement and that state-of-the-art methods and materials are used to uphold academic standards
  • Reviews and coordinates the updating and documentation of Health Sciences Center processes, procedures, and protocols on an annual basis
  • Addresses and resolves student and personnel matters
  • Works directly with the Institutional Effectiveness Office to improve the Colleges and the Health Sciences Centers effectiveness, and to develop and maintain a culture of evidence-based actions and continuous improvement, including annual program reviews, advisory committee, and other stakeholder input
  • Seeks grants and other opportunities for procuring resources
  • Communicates effectively with faculty and staff through monthly meetings and other methods; leads and supports cross-disciplinary work within and outside the Center
  • Coordinates the updating of content of website, catalog, and other media pertaining to area
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the Colleges mission, values and goals

Minimum Q alifications

Masters degree in education or health related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning

ORa bachelors degree in a health related field with completion of a relevant masters degree within three years of employment.

Five (5) years progressive professional experience in any combination of the following: healthcare administration, nursing, allied health

OR

Three (3) years teaching experience at the college level and one (1) year experience as a program chair or demonstrated experience supervising faculty and/or staff in a community college setting.

Current licensure or certifications applicable to field.

Valid NC Drivers License.

Preferred

Masters degree in a health-related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Demonstrated experience or course work in curriculum design and evaluation, experience in program development and grant writing, continuous process improvement, experience using methods of technology to facilitate education, including simulation, experience using retention and/or advising models that promote success for a diverse student population.

Community college experience.

  • Health care and health care delivery systems, health professions and educational programs and curriculum development, andrelated state/federal legislation and initiatives
  • Business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources
  • Current complex principles and practices of instructional program development and administration
  • Organizational and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies, and operational needs
  • Student learning outcomes and assessment activities at the program and course levels

Skills

  • Adept at cultivating and sustaining high-level professional relationships and partnerships and providing collaborative and inclusive leadership of faculty and staff in allied health programs, participating as a member of the Colleges instructional leadership team, and representing the College in the community
  • Proficiency in monitoring and assessing the performanceoffaculty and staff and allied health instructional programsto make improvements or take corrective action
  • Exceptional planning, organization, verbal and written communication, presentation, negotiation, training, supervisory, and emotional intelligence skills
  • Competent in budget planning/management, statistical research and accreditation processes including SACS, and program-specific accreditation agencies
