What are the responsibilities and job description for the Email Marketing position at CPAC — Future of Freedom?
Ideal For
A writer who wants to be measured — someone who would rather see the open rate than be told the draft was good.
The Email Marketing Intern writes, builds, and sends email to the organization's list, and learns to read what happens next. Email is the most measurable writing an intern can do here — every subject line produces a number — which makes this the clearest portfolio in the department. The role sits in Communications because it is fundamentally writing to an audience; it works closely with Operations, which maintains the underlying data.
Core Duties
- Draft email copy, subject lines, and preview text for review.
- Build and format emails in the email platform, including links, images, and mobile rendering checks.
- Segment sends using audience criteria developed with the Operations team.
- Run A/B tests on subject lines, send times, and calls to action, and document results.
- Proofread and test every send before deployment, including all links and tracking.
- Report on open, click, conversion, and unsubscribe performance after each campaign.
- Maintain the email calendar and coordinate send timing to avoid audience fatigue.
- Ensure all sends comply with organizational policy and applicable email regulations.
Role-Specific Qualifications
- Writing sample required; persuasive or direct-response writing preferred.
- Comfort with numbers and willingness to be measured by results.
- Experience with an email service platform is a plus but not required.
- Precision under deadline — an error in a sent email cannot be corrected.
Standard Qualifications — All Internships
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university; eligible for the Federal Work Study Program where applicable.
- Senior in high school, recent high school graduate, or GED equivalent.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general computer literacy.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor.
- Discretion with confidential and pre-release information; adherence to all organizational policies, including confidentiality, data handling, and workplace safety standards.
- Prior office or customer service experience is a plus but not required.
Internship: minimum 16 hours per week, in person, Alexandria, VA. You are allowed to work up to 40 hours a week with limited overtime opportunities.
Every intern completes the program's five core competencies and attends the annual conference. Expect a written midpoint review, weekly one-on-one supervision, and a documented portfolio of completed work.
