What are the responsibilities and job description for the Content Writing position at CPAC — Future of Freedom?
Ideal For
A writer who wants volume over polish: a high number of published pieces, edited hard and fast, rather than one perfect capstone.
The Content Writing Intern produces written material for the organization's owned channels — website, blog, newsletters, and long-form explainers. This role is for students who want reps: a high volume of writing, edited hard and quickly, across a range of formats and lengths. Interns leave with a portfolio of published work under their own byline or the organization's.
Core Duties
- Draft blog posts, web copy, newsletter sections, and explainer pieces on assignment.
- Revise drafts against editorial feedback, generally within 48 hours of receiving it.
- Adapt a single piece of content across formats — long-form to summary to social copy.
- Maintain the editorial calendar for owned content, flagging conflicts and gaps.
- Source and verify all factual claims, statistics, and quotations against primary documents.
- Apply the organization's style guide consistently and flag cases the guide does not cover.
- Update and refresh existing evergreen content for accuracy and relevance.
- Proofread colleagues' drafts prior to publication.
Role-Specific Qualifications
- Two writing samples required with application, ideally in different formats.
- Demonstrated ability to write clearly for a general audience on policy or political subjects.
- Willingness to be edited substantially and to revise on deadline.
- Familiarity with a content management system is a plus.
Standard Qualifications — All Internships
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university; eligible for the Federal Work Study Program where applicable.
- Senior in high school, recent high school graduate, or GED equivalent.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general computer literacy.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor.
- Discretion with confidential and pre-release information; adherence to all organizational policies, including confidentiality, data handling, and workplace safety standards.
- Prior office or customer service experience is a plus but not required.
Internship: minimum 16 hours per week, in person, Alexandria, VA. You are allowed to work up to 40 hours a week with limited overtime opportunities.
Every intern completes the program's five core competencies and attends the annual conference. Expect a written midpoint review, weekly one-on-one supervision, and a documented portfolio of completed work.
