We are seeking an experienced Fleet Maintenance Manager / Head Mechanic to lead our internal maintenance operation while remaining actively involved in diagnosing and repairing equipment.
This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing shop operations, mentoring mechanics, maintaining fleet reliability, and performing advanced diagnostics and repairs. The position is expected to spend approximately 50% of the time leading the maintenance operation and 50% of the time working alongside technicians in the shop.

Key Responsibilities
Shop Operations & Leadership
- Direct daily workflow for shop mechanics
- Supervise shop mechanics
- Prioritize emergency vs. preventative maintenance work
- Conduct weekly shop meetings focused on quality and performance
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized shop standards
- Maintain working relationships and strong communication with drivers/operations managers
Hands-On Maintenance & Technician Development
- Perform diagnostics and repairs on heavy-duty trucks and fleet equipment
- Serve as the shop's technical resource for difficult repairs and troubleshooting
- Work alongside technicians to support productivity and quality standards
- Train, mentor, and develop mechanics through hands-on coaching
- Assist mechanics with diagnostic processes and repair planning
- Evaluate technician skill development and identify training opportunities
- Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement
- Lead by example in work ethic, safety practices, and customer service
Repair Quality Control
- Implement and manage a formal QC inspection process
- Approve and sign off on major and emergency repairs before release
- Minimize comeback rate
- Conduct root cause analysis on repeat failures
- Ensure proper diagnostic procedures are documented and followed
DOT Compliance & Fleet Documentation
- Maintain complete and audit-ready vehicle maintenance files per 49 CFR Part 396
- Ensure annual inspections are completed and documented
- Monitor and maintain preventative maintenance compliance
- Conduct internal compliance audits if needed
- Assist with DOT audits and support safety initiatives
- Ensure periodic cargo tank testing inspections (VKIP) are completed and documented by the designated Registered Inspectors
Preventative Maintenance Oversight
- Ensure systematic PM scheduling and execution
- Monitor service intervals and upcoming maintenance needs
- Reduce emergency repair frequency through proactive maintenance
Parts Inventory & Cost Control
- Oversee parts inventory system and organization
- Maintain proper inventory levels to prevent downtime
- Approve parts purchases and vendor relationships
- Work to reduce unnecessary parts spend and rework costs
Fleet Asset Management
- Monitor maintenance costs, reliability trends, and vehicle lifecycle performance
- Provide recommendations to ownership regarding major repairs, rebuilds, and equipment replacement decisions
- Assist ownership in determining when vehicles have reached the end of their economic service life
- Help develop long-term fleet replacement and capital expenditure plans
- Identify chronic maintenance issues and recommend corrective actions, replacement, or retirement strategies
Qualifications
Required:
- 5 years of heavy-duty truck or fleet maintenance experience
- 2 years of experience leading, mentoring, or supervising technicians
- Strong understanding of heavy-duty truck systems (diesel engines, aftertreatment,
- electrical, brakes, etc.)
- Knowledge of DOT maintenance compliance requirements
- Experience supervising technicians
- Strong organizational and documentation skills
- Ability to implement and enforce process improvements
Preferred:
- Experience managing 75 power units
- Familiarity with fleet maintenance software systems
- Inventory management experience
